Michael J. Fox is delving into the fantasy genre for his first leading role in nearly a decade.
While Michael J. Fox has continued to act in various roles since 2018, he hasn’t been the lead in a project until now. His last major vocal role was as A.R.C.H.I.E., a superpowered dog, in the 2018 film A.R.C.H.I.E. 2: Mission Impawsible. It’s now been announced that Fox will once again provide his voice for a fantastical movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor will voice Dougie in a new animated film called Dragoons. Dougie begins as an ordinary employee at WizCorp but is magically turned into a dragon and takes on an apprentice named Dart. The story reveals that dragons were once powerful rulers of the sky, until Hex, the company’s villainous CEO, shrank them, wiped their memories, and stole their power to create his empire.
The movie Dragoons follows two characters on a quest to discover inner strength, inspire others, and show that even small beginnings can lead to great things. Director Fox explained he was drawn to the story because of its theme—the potential for hidden power within everyone. He believes Dragoons will resonate with anyone who has ever felt ignored or underestimated.
Details about the director and writer of the upcoming film Dragoons haven’t been announced yet, but it’s being produced by Icon Creative Studio – the same studio behind the Owen Wilson movie Charlie the Wonderdog. According to Icon’s CEO Shea Wageman, actor Fox embodies both the “immense warmth and unshakeable spirit” needed for his role as Dougie. More information about when and where you can see Dragoons will be shared in the coming months.
This announcement comes seven months after he voiced Michael J. Fox in Zootopia 2, Disney’s newest animated film. He has a long history of voice acting, including roles in the Homeward Bound and Stuart Little films, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Back Home Again. He also brought Marty McFly to life through voice work in the video games Back to the Future: The Game and Lego Dimensions.
Michael J. Fox recently appeared in three episodes of the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, playing Gerry, another character with Parkinson’s disease who connected with Harrison Ford’s character. He was also featured in the documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which you can find on Apple TV+. In the 2010s, he starred in the NBC sitcom The Michael J. Fox Show and made guest appearances on popular shows like The Good Wife and Designated Survivor.
Besides starring in projects like Dragoons, Fox also authored the book Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum, released in October 2025. The memoir details his time making the original Back to the Future film, which recently marked its 40th anniversary.
