4 Years Ago Today, Star Wars Ruined the Franchise’s Coolest Character (& Hurt Its Biggest TV Show)

Four years ago today, a Star Wars movie damaged the reputation of a beloved character and negatively impacted the franchise’s most popular TV show—and neither has fully bounced back since. While the Star Wars universe has grown considerably thanks to new movies and Disney+, with shows like Andor and The Bad Batch being particularly well-received, many recent additions have proven controversial, as evidenced by the reactions to the sequel films and the show The Acolyte.

Four years ago, Disney+ released a show intended to build on a beloved Star Wars character, but it didn’t go as planned. Instead of enhancing the character’s reputation, the series actually damaged it. To make matters worse, it aired at the same time as a very popular Star Wars TV show and made decisions that ultimately harmed that show’s future. Overall, it was a disappointing moment for the franchise, especially considering how much potential it had.

The Book of Boba Fett Premiered 4 Years Ago Today (& It Was Disappointing)

The show The Book of Boba Fett premiered on December 29, 2021, as Disney+ aimed to build on the character’s existing fanbase. While Boba Fett first appeared in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, he really became popular after The Empire Strikes Back. Despite not being in many scenes, he quickly stood out as a cool and enigmatic figure, making his apparent death in Return of the Jedi a letdown for many. The character’s story continued in comics and novels, and fans also saw a young Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones.

While Boba Fett had small roles before, his major comeback happened with The Mandalorian, where Temuera Morrison reprised the character. The series revealed he survived his fall in Return of the Jedi and showed him assisting Din Djarin and Grogu, while also delving into his history with Mandalore. The initial excitement led to his own show, The Book of Boba Fett, but it didn’t live up to expectations. Although the series had many problems, its biggest issue was how it negatively impacted a character that was previously well-developed.

The Book of Boba Fett Ruined One of Star Wars’ Coolest Characters

As a big Star Wars fan, I was so excited when Disney+ announced a Boba Fett series – he’s always been a favorite! But honestly, The Book of Boba Fett was a letdown. The story just didn’t feel right, it dragged in places, and the important stuff didn’t seem to matter much. It was frustrating because Boba Fett often felt like a guest star in his own show. And when he was actually the focus, he didn’t feel like the same character we all loved from the original movies – it was like a complete 180-degree turn, and not in a good way.

The show The Book of Boba Fett tried too hard to portray its main character as purely good, which didn’t quite fit with the character’s established history. This approach removed the intriguing moral ambiguity that made Boba Fett compelling. Part of what made him interesting was the mystery surrounding him – letting viewers form their own opinions. By offering a definitive version of the character, the show risked disappointing fans who already had their own ideas about who Boba Fett was. Ultimately, even a strong performance by Temuera Morrison couldn’t save the series from feeling like a misstep for the character.

The Disney+ Show Also Hurt The Mandalorian Season 3

When The Book of Boba Fett was released, it didn’t resonate with audiences, and its problems went beyond just disappointing viewers. It actually hindered The Mandalorian Season 3, which ended up being the weakest season of that series so far. Considering The Mandalorian had been one of the best Star Wars shows on Disney+, this was a significant setback. Season 3 had the potential to be even stronger, but The Book of Boba Fett overshadowed it and prevented it from reaching its full potential.

Grogu and Din Djarin’s emotional reunion in The Book of Boba Fett after their separation at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2 felt out of place. Many fans felt this important storyline should have unfolded within The Mandalorian itself. It wasn’t the only significant plot development that appeared in the wrong series, leading to jokes that The Book of Boba Fett essentially included two lost episodes of The Mandalorian. While cameos and references are common, continuing The Mandalorian‘s main story in another show made both series feel disjointed. The upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie in 2026 offers a chance to address these issues, but it’s uncertain if Boba Fett will get a satisfying return in the future.
