As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve always felt the original trilogy – A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi – truly set the standard for everything that followed. It’s amazing to think that for decades, every new Star Wars movie, whether it was part of the main saga or a spin-off, seemed to exist to build upon or explain something from those initial films. George Lucas’ prequels were all about fleshing out the backstory of Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker, while the sequels showed us where Luke, Leia, and Han ended up later in life. Even the standalone films like Solo and Rogue One were essentially prequels to A New Hope, each offering a different perspective on the galaxy far, far away before the events we first saw all those years ago.
It’s easy to see why the original Star Wars trilogy is so popular. It’s universally loved, the foundation for everything that followed, and many consider it the best movie trilogy ever made. Characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader have become iconic figures in our culture. Interestingly, the newest Star Wars story, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is the first to not feature any of these classic heroes.
Star Wars Moving Away From The Original Trilogy Is A Good Thing

All the previous Star Wars films have connected to the original trilogy by including its main characters, often in important parts. The prequels featured Anakin, Palpatine, Obi-Wan, and Yoda, while the sequels brought back Luke, Han, and Leia. Even the standalone films weren’t exceptions: Solo focused entirely on Han (and Chewbacca), and Rogue One included a significant scene with Darth Vader and a brief appearance by Leia at the end.
While The Mandalorian and Grogu is packed with nods to the broader Star Wars universe, it largely avoids featuring well-known characters. There’s a brief, unconfirmed appearance by an astromech droid that might be R2-D2, but beyond that, and a few minor references like creatures from the Dejarik game and R5-D4, the series doesn’t rely heavily on characters from the original trilogy – a unique approach compared to other Star Wars films.
It would have been easy to include characters like Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Since heroes were already active during that time, and Jedi have appeared in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett before, the creators chose to keep this particular story focused and self-contained.
Currently, The Mandalorian and Grogu are the only stories doing this, but that will change. The next Star Wars movie, Starfighter, coming in 2027, will be set five years after The Rise of Skywalker and feature a completely new cast of characters. While there’s talk of a connection to Rey’s Jedi Order, officially, it’s a separate story that doesn’t tie into previous films, and won’t include characters from the original Star Wars trilogy.

While some Star Wars stories still focus on past characters – Darth Vader appeared in the first season of Maul – Shadow Lord, and will likely return for Season 2, and Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin in Ahsoka Season 2 – the movies are finally moving away from constantly revisiting the Original Trilogy, which is a positive change. Hopefully, the series will also stop relying so heavily on The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels in the future.
While the existing movies and characters are fantastic, the Star Wars galaxy feels limited. It keeps revisiting the same stories and characters from a short period of time. The franchise needs to expand its horizons and explore new ideas. The Mandalorian and Grogu was a good start, but hopefully, Starfighter will represent a more significant leap forward.
Just because new Star Wars stories are being told doesn’t mean we should abandon the original trilogy. Andor proved how effectively you can build on that foundation while still offering something new and exciting. However, Andor primarily focused on new or less familiar characters. There’s still a place for moments that appeal to longtime fans, but they need to feel natural to the story – like Vader’s appearance in Maul, which was a fantastic surprise. Star Wars has the potential to be so much more, and exploring different time periods and developing compelling characters will only make the universe more vibrant. That’s especially important for the films moving forward.
You can now see The Mandalorian and Grogu in movie theaters. And mark your calendars for Star Wars: Starfighter, which comes out on May 27, 2027.
