44 Years Ago, An Iconic ’80s Sci-fi Show Delivered a Final Episode That Isn’t the Real Ending

Most popular, long-running sitcoms are allowed to finish their stories in a satisfying way. Even shows like Seinfeld and Home Improvement eventually reached a natural conclusion, offering endings that felt appropriate even if fans weren’t entirely expecting them. Sitcoms remain popular because viewers enjoy the familiar characters and settings. Because of this, a well-executed finale can cement a show’s legacy, while a poor one can tarnish it forever.

The 1980s sitcom Mork & Mindy stands out as a rare success story, uniquely notable as both a spin-off and a science fiction comedy. Thanks largely to Robin Williams’ unforgettable performance, the show remains one of the best sitcoms of its time—and perhaps ever. His strong work is so memorable that many fans have forgotten the show’s bizarre ending, which aired 44 years ago today, on May 27, 1982.

Mork and Mindy’s Last Episode Wasn’t the Real Finale

Throughout the TV show Mork & Mindy, the alien Mork regularly sends reports about life on Earth back to his home planet, Ork. In the series finale, aptly named “The Mork Report,” Mork shares his findings on what makes a successful marriage, identifying honesty, respect, romance, and compatibility as key ingredients. The episode demonstrates how Mork and Mindy themselves practice these elements in their relationship.

Mork earns a well-deserved promotion by the end of the episode, providing a satisfying conclusion that highlights the strong chemistry between the characters and the show’s unique appeal. Interestingly, this happy ending wasn’t initially planned; it was a last-minute decision to ensure the series concluded on a positive note.

I remember when Mork & Mindy first came on – everyone was watching! But honestly, it didn’t stay that way. By Season 4, the show was really struggling. They actually tried to keep making episodes as if it might get renewed for another season, which meant they hadn’t planned a proper finale. Luckily, the episode “The Mork Report,” which Robin Williams even directed, turned out to be the perfect way to wrap things up. Can you believe they almost ended the show with a really strange and depressing storyline? Thankfully, that didn’t happen!

Mork and Mindy Almost Ended on a Cliffhanger

As a huge Mork & Mindy fan, I always found the show’s final storyline pretty wild! Originally, they planned just three episodes to wrap things up, and it was called “Gotta Run.” They brought in this new alien, Kalnik, who’d also married a human – but unlike Mork, Kalnik was from Neptune! At first, it looked like Mork and Kalnik might become friends, but it quickly turned out Kalnik was up to no good. Things got really crazy when they revealed Kalnik’s wife, Tracy, wasn’t even real – she was an android with explosives inside! She tried to get close to Mork, but when that failed, she blew up right in Mork’s apartment. And believe it or not, that was just the beginning of the three-part finale!

In the final episodes of the “Gotta Run” storyline, Mork and Mindy are fleeing from both Kalnik and the U.S. government, who think Mork is a threat. They decide the best way to solve this is to reveal Mork’s true identity to the world, despite Mindy’s fears. Surprisingly, the world not only accepts Mork, but he instantly becomes a global superstar.

It all came crashing down in the final episode. Mork and I were completely overwhelmed, and we ended up back at our messy apartment. But then Kalnik showed up, ready to kill both Mork and me! Mork, being Mork, tried to stall him by asking to borrow his favorite shoes—which turned out to be time travel shoes! He clicked his heels, and suddenly we were in the Stone Age, hanging out with cave people. Of course, Kalnik followed us through time, still determined to finish us off. Luckily, Mork clicked those shoes again and we escaped, but the episode ended with us spinning through a crazy vortex. Mork looked at me and said, “I don’t know what’s in store for us, but whatever happens, we’ll have each other,” and it really meant a lot.

This wasn’t the absolute final scene of the show, but it came very close. It would have created a major cliffhanger, leaving viewers wondering what would happen next, and drastically changing the direction of a possible fifth season. However, unlike other shows that ended with cliffhangers, Mork & Mindy had a unique benefit: the creators knew the show wouldn’t be renewed, and they were able to reschedule the final episodes to provide a proper conclusion.
