Zombies have been a popular fixture in movies and pop culture for many years, consistently scaring audiences. Surprisingly, filmmakers continue to create new and successful zombie films, even after decades of the genre. A prime example is World War Z, which offered a large-scale, action-packed take on a zombie apocalypse. Despite a difficult production, the movie was a huge hit in theaters, becoming the highest-grossing zombie film ever. Now, it’s also found success as a streaming favorite while fans eagerly await a sequel.
According to the streaming data site FlixPatrol, World War Z is currently the most popular movie on Paramount+ globally. Interestingly, despite not being available on Paramount+ in the U.S., it’s maintained the top spot for quite a while. FlixPatrol’s data shows World War Z is significantly more popular than the second-ranked film, Take Cover, with a score of 177 compared to 153.
Is The World War Z Sequel Finally Happening?

Although the first World War Z movie did well at the box office, a sequel has been stuck in development for years. Several directors, including J.A. Bayona and David Fincher, have been considered for the project, but nothing has come together. Despite these difficulties, Paramount Pictures recently announced at CinemaCon that a new World War Z film is being planned. However, very few details are known, and it’s unclear if any of the original cast, like Brad Pitt, will be involved.
Paramount likely wants Brad Pitt to return for another World War Z film. He’s still a major movie star, as proven by the success of F1 last year, and his recognizable face would be a great asset for marketing. While the zombies are the main attraction, having a famous actor like Pitt promote the film would definitely help. It might be even more interesting to see who directs the sequel. Pitt has a good working relationship with David Fincher – they collaborated on The Adventures of Cliff Booth this year – and he might be able to convince Fincher to take on the project.
Despite the recent announcement, fans shouldn’t expect a new World War Z movie anytime soon. While Paramount is exploring the possibility, the project is still in very early development. The studio is currently focused on established franchises like Star Trek and Top Gun, meaning World War Z isn’t a top priority. There’s a real chance the movie won’t actually happen, as it’s been a challenge to get a sequel off the ground after the original film came out thirteen years ago.
It’s understandable why Paramount is still promoting World War Z. The movie was successful when it was released and remains popular with audiences. Despite not currently benefiting from domestic viewership in some measurements, its continued success on Paramount+ demonstrates its lasting global appeal. While the movie theater business has changed since the early 2010s, international audiences are still a key source of revenue for Hollywood, and Paramount is hoping to leverage World War Z‘s continued popularity.
