Hayao Miyazaki is a hugely influential anime director who has gained international recognition for his films. He made history as the first anime director to win an Academy Award, and his movies continue to be popular and impactful years after they were released. As a co-founder of Studio Ghibli – established in 1985 with Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata – Miyazaki played a key role in building the studio’s remarkable reputation. Studio Ghibli is famous for creating some of the most cherished animated films ever made, known for beautiful hand-drawn animation, compelling stories, and emotionally resonant themes. The studio’s signature style includes detailed artwork, vibrant scenery, smooth motion, and expressive characters, all contributing to truly stunning visuals.
I’m a huge Miyazaki fan, and while everyone knows his incredible anime films, a lot of people don’t realize he’s also a talented manga artist! He actually wrote and illustrated Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind back in 1982, which he then turned into the amazing film we all love in 1984. It’s special because it was made before Studio Ghibli was officially founded – it came out of Topcraft! And it really is one of his masterpieces. The manga ran until 1994, and now, after 44 years, they’ve re-released a beautiful two-volume deluxe edition – I couldn’t be more excited!
Studio Ghibli Brings Back The Two-Volume Deluxe Edition of the Manga

This complete manga collection, originally published in Japan in 1996, features all 59 chapters in hardcover. Viz Media officially released an English version in 2012, and it’s still considered one of the best Ghibli manga available. The official Ghibli store is now restocking the individual volumes. Each book includes beautiful color illustrations from the original series, making this a stunning and lasting collector’s edition of a classic. Donguri Sora has provided details on the volumes and updated prices for the Japanese release.
This special re-release is only available to fans in Japan, as the store doesn’t offer international shipping. Although the movie shares a title with the original manga, it’s not a direct adaptation – the storyline is quite different. The story is set over a thousand years after a devastating nuclear war nearly wiped out life on Earth. Despite the passage of time, humanity continues to fight for survival, now facing a dangerously evolved jungle – a lasting consequence of the war.
Princess Nausicaä discovers a looming danger to her kingdom and ventures into a poisonous jungle to prevent enemies from unleashing a devastating weapon from a long-ago war. You can watch the movie now by streaming or renting it on platforms like Prime Video, Hulu, Fandango at Home, and HBO Max.
