Even well-written leads, like Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Itadori and My Hero Academia‘s Midoriya, are often overshadowed by more intriguing supporting players. And in many cases, the characterization of a well-wrought protagonist is on par with that of the best side characters. Many series — from darker ones, like Attack on Titan, to classics like One Piece or Cowboy Bebop — introduce an ensemble of layered and compelling personalities.

It’s hard to pick the most interesting character when a show has a lot of strong ones, but sometimes one character clearly stands out. Certain protagonists are simply so realistic or unforgettable that they immediately capture your attention, overshadowing everyone else. While Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion features many compelling characters, Lelouch is the most captivating. From the start, he’s charming and intriguing, with a hidden darkness that draws you in. His flaws and secrets actually make him a more fascinating character – he’s both entertaining and complex. Lelouch isn’t simply good or evil, and that ambiguity is what makes truly great characters. Although C.C., Euphemia, and Suzaku are all well-developed, Lelouch consistently takes center stage. His unpredictable nature keeps viewers guessing and ultimately challenges how they view the entire anime.

4) Death Note

Death Note features a fantastic cast of characters, with both the main leads and supporting roles like Ryuk and L being particularly memorable. While they’re all strong, Light Yagami is arguably the most compelling, largely due to his complex portrayal of narcissism and antisocial behavior. He’s not necessarily someone you’ll root for, but his unpredictable nature and captivating pursuit of god-like power make him impossible to ignore – much like Lelouch from another popular series.

The anime Berserk features many memorable characters, but Guts is particularly compelling because of his deeply traumatic past and how it affects him. The story doesn’t shy away from the harshness of his experiences, giving Guts realistic flaws and ongoing struggles. 2) Talentless Nana

Characters with questionable morals often make for compelling stories, and that’s definitely true with Talentless Nana. The show features a group of teenagers, each with their own goals – some of which are quite dark – but Nana is by far the most complex character. What begins with simple motivations for her quickly evolves, revealing surprising new layers to her personality. She’s not only entertaining to watch, but she’s much more than she initially seems. It’s disappointing that we haven’t had the chance to fully see the consequences of her transformation, especially since a second season of Talentless Nana hasn’t been released yet. Despite this, the intriguing main character and the show’s many twists make it worth watching.

1) Vinland Saga

While Askeladd is a strong contender, Thorfinn from Vinland Saga is the most compelling character in the series. This is because he truly changes and grows – something relatively rare in anime. Thorfinn begins driven by revenge, a common trait for anime heroes, but in Season 2, he starts to seriously question whether endless violence is worth it. This makes him a complex and layered character, giving him more depth than most of the supporting characters in Vinland Saga.
