As we reach the middle of the year, while some of the most anticipated movies like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Dune: Part Three, Avengers: Doomsday, and The Odyssey haven’t been released yet, 2026 has already delivered some excellent films. Despite the reputation for slow starts, this year’s movies have been surprisingly good, and many are already available to watch at home with just a few clicks, making it a great year for film so far.
While films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie are now available to rent online, and big titles like Scream 7 will be on Paramount+ next week, they don’t necessarily represent the best films of the year. Instead, these five movies stand out as both critically acclaimed and currently accessible online, perfect if you didn’t catch them in theaters. Several of them will even be available to stream very soon.
5) Project Hail Mary

The popular movie version of Andy Weir’s science fiction novel successfully reunited directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and firmly established Ryan Gosling as a leading actor. With stunning visual effects, a captivating and unpredictable storyline, and a memorable non-human character, Project Hail Mary is easily one of the year’s best films and a strong contender for next year’s Academy Awards.
You can watch POV on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. It will be available to stream for free on Prime Video later this summer.
4) The Drama

Robert Pattinson and Zendaya lead this darkly funny and surprising new movie. The plot kicks off with a completely unexpected event – unless you already know what happens! Both actors give standout performances that could be among their best work yet. From the producers of critically acclaimed films like Hereditary, Eddington, and Beau Is Afraid, The Drama is a challenging and unsettling watch that won’t appeal to everyone. However, viewers who appreciate this kind of film will find it a unique and satisfying experience.
You can currently stream POV on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. It will also be available to stream for free with an HBO Max subscription later this summer.
3) 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

I was really surprised by the second film in the 28 Years Later series, The Bone Temple. It didn’t do well in theaters, which is a shame, because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a horror sequel. Nia DaCosta did an amazing job balancing the story – we get this really thought-provoking, almost sad journey with Ralph Fiennes’ character, Dr. Ian Kelson, alongside the genuinely terrifying world built by Jack O’Connell’s Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, and his influence over Alfie Williams’ Spike. It’s scary, but also funny and surprisingly heartwarming! Seriously, you need to see it, especially because of how it sets up the third film – it’s a fantastic tease!
Available to Stream on: Netflix (at no additional cost)
2) Faces of Death

Reviving the notorious video series Faces of Death in the 2020s feels like a bold move, but the 2026 film actually hits a compelling sweet spot for horror reboots. It’s genuinely frightening, and cleverly explores why audiences seek out scary content. Directors Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber are establishing themselves as a truly innovative team, and their vision is powerfully brought to life by a standout performance from Dacre Montgomery.
You can stream POV on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. It will also be available to stream for free on Shudder later this summer.
1) Hoppers

Pixar has faced some challenges recently, with several films underperforming in theaters over the past six years. However, Hoppers is a welcome success, demonstrating that audiences are still eager for original Pixar stories. The film also shows Pixar’s ability to revisit familiar themes in new and exciting ways. Featuring funny performances from Piper Curda and Bobby Moynihan, Hoppers signals a return to form for the studio. Importantly, unlike some other animated films released this year, Hoppers offers entertainment for viewers of all ages.
You can currently stream POV on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. It will also be available to stream for free on Disney+ later this summer.
