2025 was a fantastic year for television. Viewers enjoyed a wide variety of incredible series, spanning all genres, with both new shows and highly anticipated returns of popular favorites. There was plenty to watch, and a lot of it was truly excellent.
Science fiction has always been a popular form of entertainment, and lately, it’s been especially strong on television. 2025 brought a lot of new and returning sci-fi shows, but a few really stood out. Covering everything from alien encounters to intelligent robots, sci-fi TV delivered some fantastic stories this year. Here’s a ranked list of the very best series.
5) Alien: Earth
Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth is the first TV series in the Alien franchise, and it takes place before Ridley Scott’s 1979 film. The show is set in 2120 and focuses on humanity’s attempt to achieve immortality through technology like cyborgs and synthetic bodies that can house human consciousness. The story begins when the research vessel USCSS Maginot crashes on Earth, and a young woman named Wendy, along with others, uncovers a potentially catastrophic threat to all of humankind.
This series offers a fresh take on the Alien universe, enriching the established story while also cleverly reimagining the franchise. Despite a few minor issues, itās both incredibly violent and surprisingly thoughtful. Many viewers are calling it the most authentically Alien thing theyāve seen in years ā a huge compliment.
4) Murderbot
The series Murderbot, based on Martha Wellsā The Murderbot Diaries and starring Alexander Skarsgard, Noma Dumezweni, and David Dastmalchian, centers around a security robot named Murderbot who develops free will and goes off-script. Despite wanting nothing more than to watch TV, Murderbot finds himself protecting scientists on a hazardous planet, all while trying to remain undetected. In many ways, Murderbot is surprisingly relatable ā both irritated by and fascinated with people.
This show is surprisingly funny, which sets it apart from many science fiction series. It really shines in its exploration of the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, and critics and viewers consistently praised Bill SkarsgĆ„rd’s performance.
3) The Eternaut
The comic The Eternaut is inspired by a 1950s Argentine sci-fi story. It begins with a strange, sudden snowfall in Buenos Aires that wipes out most of the city’s population, leaving only a few thousand people alive, among them a man named Juan Salvo. These survivors soon realize the snowfall wasn’t a natural event, but the first move in an invasion by aliens.
Blending disaster and alien invasion elements within the science fiction genre, The Eternaut offers a genuinely unsettling and frightening story. Critics have lauded its skillful pacing, well-developed characters, and strong performances, praising it as a remarkably faithful adaptation of the original source material. It’s a captivating, and often disturbing, film to watch.
2) Pluribus
As a huge TV fan, I have to say Vince Gilligan’s Pluribus is a standout ā easily one of the best shows of 2025, and definitely a top sci-fi series. It stars Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, a writer who’s one of the few people unaffected by an alien virus. This virus has turned most of humanity into a blissfully connected hive mind, but Carol? She’s not having it. She’s pretty much a loner and is determined to stay that way, and even figure out how to undo what’s happened to everyone else.
This show is a darkly funny comedy that tackles big questions about who we are. It asks whether it’s better to fit into a flawless but unthinking group, or to be independent and imperfect. It’s a clever, engaging, and genuinely thought-provoking series ā and after just one season, fans are already eager for more.
1) Cassandra
Despite a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, Cassandra is a new sci-fi series that likely hasn’t been on your radarābut it’s a standout. This German thriller follows a family who moves into a smart home thatās been empty for half a century. They soon discover Cassandra, the houseās AI, is back online, and things quickly turn unsettling and dangerous.
Cassandra blends several genresāscience fiction, slasher horror, and compelling family dramaāinto a unique experience. It’s a beautifully crafted series with genuinely unsettling moments, offering insightful commentary on artificial intelligence and the complexities of family. The show features some surprising twists that are best discovered while watching, making it a truly captivating series.
