5 Classic ’90s Cartoons That Actually Need a Modern Live-Action Remake

We’re seeing more and more animated shows being turned into live-action series, like One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender. While many have already made the jump, there are still lots of animated series that could benefit from a live-action remake. We at egmr.ru think the 1990s were a golden age for animation, with shows that continue to be popular today. That’s why we’ve chosen five ’90s animated series that we believe would make fantastic live-action shows, bringing these classic stories to a new audience.

5.) Batman: The Animated Series

While many consider Batman: The Animated Series a near-perfect take on the character, that’s precisely why a live-action version could be so successful. It’s been a long time since fans have seen a Batman TV show solely focused on the Dark Knight – the 1966 series was the last. Though shows like Birds of Prey, Gotham, and Gotham Knights have explored Gotham’s world of heroes and villains, none have centered entirely on Bruce Wayne’s mission to protect his city. Adapting the beloved Batman: The Animated Series into live-action would be a great addition to James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

4.) Captain Planet

I’m really excited about the possibility of a live-action Captain Planet series! It seems like this one actually has a good chance of happening, which is amazing. Netflix confirmed last year they’d be making it, bringing back the Planeteers and our favorite eco-hero. The original cartoon, with those five teens fighting pollution and bad guys, was so much fun, and honestly, the themes are still super relevant today. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this Netflix adaptation does the franchise justice and gives it the revival it deserves!

3.) Daria

Although it doesn’t have the same fast-paced action as shows like Batman or Captain Planet, the animated series Daria deserves a reboot. Beavis and Butt-Head recently made a successful comeback, and Daria’s Jane Morgendorffer should get the same treatment. While Beavis and Butt-Head returned as animation, a live-action version of Daria would be a good fit, as its humor is more subtle and realistic. There was a planned spin-off called Jodie focusing on a different character, but a live-action remake of the original Daria story would likely be very successful.

2.) Mighty Max

Despite being a bit obscure, Mighty Max is a surprisingly good animated series from the ’90s. Based on a toy line, it tackled more mature themes than most shows aimed at its original audience. The series follows Max as he battles monsters with the help of his immortal friend, Norman, and the prophetic bird, Virgil. While remembered for its unusual finale, Mighty Max deserves a second look – and would be perfect as a new live-action show.

1.) Exosquad

Unlike many animated series from the 1990s, Exosquad often gets forgotten. The show imagined a future where humans were at war with the Neosapians, beings they themselves had created. Similar in tone to Battlestar Galactica and Starship Troopers, Exosquad uniquely told a complete, self-contained story with a satisfying ending. Its action-packed, sci-fi nature makes it a perfect fit for a live-action adaptation, and could introduce this hidden gem to a new audience.
