Nintendo Switch Online members can enjoy a free download of a classic SNES game to celebrate its 33rd anniversary. The game is part of the Nintendo Switch Online library, and it was also recently re-released as part of a collection, making it available for purchase on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 eShops since February.
Today, April 27th, marks the 33rd anniversary of Super Bomberman! Released in Japan in 1993 by Hudson Soft, this action maze game was a hit and launched the popular Bomberman series. Although it didn’t reach the United States until later that year, it first became available in Japan on this day.

One of the Best SNES Games
Though Super Bomberman isn’t considered one of the absolute best games on the SNES, it’s definitely among the top 50 of all time, particularly when considering its popularity and impact. It’s easily the best four-player experience on the console, and likely ranks among the top 100 games of the 1990s. What’s great is that this beloved, critically praised classic is still enjoyable to play today.
Free With Switch Online + New Collection
If you’re a Nintendo Switch Online member, you can play this anniversary game at no extra cost – you don’t need the Expansion Pack. If you don’t have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and aren’t planning to get one, you can still enjoy the game! It wasn’t originally available on the Switch, but Konami released the Super Bomberman Collection in February for $19.99. This collection includes the original game, as well as all the sequels that came out for Super Nintendo and other consoles.
If you’re looking back at this game for its anniversary, you’ll find that it still plays remarkably well, just like many games from the Super Nintendo era. Generally, 2D games from that time have aged better than early 3D games, which often feel very basic compared to modern titles. Many consider the 1990s to be the peak of 2D game design, so if you’re seeking classic 2D experiences, you’ll often find them in games from that decade. This isn’t the case with 3D games, where the best versions are usually more recent releases.
