Video games should be enjoyable, but they also need to be challenging. Originally, that challenge was designed to encourage players to spend more money at arcades. Over time, however, developers realized players just wanted to have fun, so they added difficulty settings to suit different skill levels. There’s no shame in choosing an easier difficulty – games are meant to be enjoyed! But some games playfully tease players who do. Here are five of the most amusing examples, presented in a random order.
1) Demolition Man

The Demolition Man video game, released during the 16-bit console days, playfully teased players who chose the easiest difficulty setting. If you selected “Easy,” a short clip of Sylvester Stallone from the movie would appear, with him simply saying, “You suck.” This was an impressive feature for the time, limited by the consoles’ capabilities. Players probably felt a little guilty about letting their hero down by choosing the easiest way to play.
2) Wolfenstein 3D

One of the first games to playfully mock players for picking an easier difficulty was Wolfenstein 3D by id Software. When selecting a difficulty level, players were presented with options like: Level 4 – “I am Death incarnate!”, Level 3 – “Bring ‘em on!”, Level 2 – “Don’t hurt me”, and Level 1 – “Can I play, Daddy?”. Beyond the condescending titles, the game also displayed the protagonist, B.J. Blazkowicz, wearing a bonnet and sucking on a pacifier if you chose the easiest setting. Id Software continued this playful tradition in many of their subsequent games, jokingly ‘punishing’ players who preferred a more relaxed experience.
3) Contra 4

Playing Contra 4 on easy mode starts out fun, letting you blast through enemies and levels. However, the game abruptly stops you at stage seven, forcing you to increase the difficulty if you want to continue. This means you won’t be able to experience the final two stages unless you switch to a harder setting. It’s reminiscent of the original Contra, a notoriously difficult NES game that often required players to use the Konami Code to get enough lives to finish, so this feels like a deliberate throwback to that challenging experience.
4) Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn

The original Shaq Fu game, released in 1994, was notoriously bad, riding the wave of Shaquille O’Neal’s popularity despite being a terrible gaming experience. Surprisingly, in 2018, a sequel, Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn, was released – and it’s just as poor as the first. What’s really strange is that the game actually mocks players for choosing easier difficulty levels. The hard mode description warns it “May induce labor,” normal mode is dismissively labeled “Not quite hard,” and choosing easy mode prompts the message, “Dude, have some self-respect,” implying that anyone playing Shaq-Fu on easy probably lacks it.
5) Twisted Metal 2

Several games, like Contra 4, were known for surprising players mid-game. Twisted Metal 2 had a particularly frustrating trick: if you played on Easy mode, you’d hit a roadblock at Stage 4. A stop sign would appear, telling you that only players on Medium or Hard difficulty were allowed to continue. This forced you to restart the entire game on a higher difficulty to progress past the third stage.
