The idea of a multiverse – multiple parallel universes – has been a key part of DC Comics since the first Flash team-up in 1961. Even though DC once erased these alternate worlds in the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ storyline, they brought them back, opening up exciting new stories and fresh takes on beloved characters. While universes like Earth-3 (home of the villainous Crime Syndicate) and the Absolute Universe are well-known, DC’s vast multiverse likely contains many other fascinating parallel Earths that haven’t gotten the attention they deserve.
DC Comics features a vast multiverse where creators have reimagined classic heroes and villains in unique ways. While many of these alternate worlds were once popular, they’ve largely been forgotten, even though they featured compelling characters and stories.
5) Justice Riders Universe

On one alternate Earth (Earth-18), the villain Time Trapper trapped the world in the late 1800s, turning it into a permanent Wild West. Even in this setting, heroes were still needed! The Justice Riders comic series shows a team of DC heroes reimagined as cowboys, working to protect people from outlaws and supervillains. The team is led by either Superchief or Madame .44 and includes members like Bat-Lash, El Diablo, Pow-Wow Smith, Tomahawkman, John Jones, and Johnny Thunder. Earth-18 not only provides a fun, Western take on classic DC characters, but it also honors DC’s history of Wild West comics.
4) Gods and Monsters Universe

The world of Justice League: Gods and Monsters started as an animated movie and presents a grittier take on familiar heroes. These aren’t the virtuous Justice League we usually know – they’re flawed, often violent, and viewed with suspicion by people. This universe reimagines Superman as the son of Zod, raised by Mexican immigrants, Batman as a vampire, and Wonder Woman as a rebellious New God princess. The movie and related comics were captivating, offering complex new versions of these iconic characters. While DC Comics put this universe on hold, it’s definitely time to revisit it and explore darker takes on other heroes.
3) Just Imagine Universe

While Stan Lee is famous for creating iconic characters at Marvel Comics, he briefly worked with DC Comics too. During this time, he reinvented DC’s most well-known heroes in a series called Just Imagine, creating a universe—known as Earth-6—that felt more like a Marvel story. He gave these heroes new backgrounds, powers, and identities. For example, his Superman was a space police officer, Batman was a professional wrestler, Wonder Woman’s powers came from an Incan sun god, Green Lantern was linked to Norse mythology, and the Flash got her abilities from radioactive hummingbird blood. Both the original 2001 series and the 2022 revival offered imaginative and exciting takes on these DC characters, staying true to Stan Lee’s creative spirit.
2) Tangent Universe

DC Comics features a fascinating alternate universe called Earth-9, also known as the Tangent Universe. While the characters share names with their familiar counterparts, their stories and powers are completely different. This world’s main hero is the Atom, who controls atoms, and other heroes include a ghostly medieval Batman, a Wonder Woman with reality-bending powers, a Green Lantern who commands the dead, a Flash made of light, and a Joker who fights for freedom. Surprisingly, Superman is a powerful mind-reader and mover of objects who ended up conquering the world. These wildly creative takes on classic DC characters are truly imaginative, and it’s a pity we don’t see them more often.
1) Earth One Universe

I was really excited when DC launched Earth One back in the 2010s. It was a totally fresh take on their heroes, showing us younger, more flawed versions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others, all with brand new backstories. The stories were really compelling and made you think. It’s a shame the series was stopped after a few books – the releases were too spread out, and it just faded away. It’s frustrating because you can really see its influence in movies like Man of Steel and The Batman, but nobody seems to talk about Earth One anymore. It was such a cool world, and it really deserves more attention!
