While fantasy worlds seem exciting, they’re often more challenging than people think. Characters might gain fame and fortune, but usually only after battling dangerous enemies. Not everyone gets a happy ending, and these worlds face constant struggles, especially on television. Unfortunately, shows with fantasy elements – swords, dragons, and magic – are often canceled by networks and streaming services.
Many fantasy shows unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations, either by straying from the original stories or simply failing to attract an audience. But the shows on this list were different. Here are five fantastic fantasy series that were cancelled prematurely.
5) The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

The 1980s gave us some fantastic fantasy films, like Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, which told the story of a planet called Thra facing a great danger. Years later, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance brought viewers back to Thra and was widely celebrated. Many praised the show for its impressive visuals and a story that lived up to the original movie. Despite its success, Netflix unexpectedly canceled it after just one season, and they never explained why – a disappointing decision, as there was clearly potential for more stories to be told.
4) Willow

Similar to the classic film The Dark Crystal, Willow (1988) captivated viewers with its imaginative world and unique creatures. While the movie was initially a hit, it took over three decades for Disney to create a sequel. The Willow TV series, which premiered in 2022, reunited original cast members like Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood, and launched them on a new, challenging quest. Sadly, the series was cancelled after just one season on Disney+. To make matters worse, Disney has since removed Willow from its streaming platform as part of cost reductions.
3) Warrior Nun

Comic book adaptations are popular on TV today, with shows like Prime Video’s The Boys and all the series from Marvel and DC proving it. In 2020, Netflix entered the scene with Warrior Nun, based on a comic book character created by Ben Dunn. The show centered on a young woman unexpectedly caught in a battle between warriors and demons. Despite a good run of two seasons and plans for an even bigger third season, Netflix unexpectedly cancelled the show. While a continuation as a movie was discussed, nothing has come of it in the past couple of years.
2) Shadow and Bone

Netflix has a history of ending shows prematurely, but the cancellation of Shadow and Bone was particularly disappointing for many viewers. The series, adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s novels, was set in a fantastical world filled with Grisha—people with extraordinary powers. Alina, a unique Grisha, found herself targeted by dangerous enemies. Unfortunately, before her story could fully unfold, Netflix cancelled the show, and despite passionate appeals from fans, the decision hasn’t been reversed.
1) The Wheel of Time

In 2021, Prime Video launched its own epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, based on Robert Jordan’s popular books, hoping to compete with Netflix’s successful adaptations. The show featured talented actors like Rosamund Pike, but unfortunately, Prime Video canceled it during its third season. This was disappointing, as the series was finally gaining momentum and a potential fourth season could have been its strongest yet.
