Everyone agrees the Hulk is incredibly strong, but the gamma radiation that created him did more than just give him super strength. From the instant Bruce Banner was exposed to those rays, he became linked to a truly powerful and strange energy within the Marvel Universe. While he became a giant, incredibly strong creature famous for his potential to destroy things, the Hulk is more complex than just brute force – and years of Marvel comics have shown us that.
While often explained by science, the Hulk is also a surprisingly supernatural being. The gamma radiation that created him, similar to the source of the Flash’s powers, is chaotic and grants him abilities beyond just incredible strength. He can heal like Wolverine and even has a strange link to the world beyond life. Here are five of the Hulk’s lesser-known, gamma-fueled powers that go beyond brute force.
5. Healing Factor

Hulk is incredibly durable, but he’s not invincible. A powerful, sharp weapon or a forceful attack can injure him, even to the point of removing a limb or causing serious wounds. Luckily, Hulk has a remarkable healing ability that allows him to recover from almost any injury. The process is often painful and the results can be gruesome, but as long as he’s alive, the gamma radiation in his system lets him heal and keep fighting.
4. Energy Absorption

Hulk essentially acts as a container for immense gamma energy. A surprising benefit of this is his ability to absorb energy from other Hulks – he demonstrated this by draining the Red Hulk’s power in Avengers #685. Interestingly, Red Hulk can do the same thing, having once absorbed the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer. While not a common tactic for Bruce Banner or other Hulks, this ability proves incredibly useful when facing opponents with energy levels equal to or greater than Hulk’s own.
3. Eye Beams

While Cyclops is famous for shooting beams from his eyes, the Hulk has actually used this power several times too. In the 2021 Hulk comic series, the Hulk gained the ability to fire beams from his eyes. He even used this power in battles against Thor and Iron Man – and his beams were strong enough to break Iron Man’s Celestial armor! The Hulk is already incredibly strong, but you definitely don’t want to get on his bad side, or he might just blast you with optic beams.
2. Ghost Sense

Gamma radiation, the source of the Hulk’s power, has a surprising connection to the supernatural. This explains one of his oldest and most unusual abilities: he can see ghosts. Sometimes, like in The Incredible Hulk #27, Hulk doesn’t even realize the people he’s seeing are spirits. While he has many incredible powers, this one is particularly strange and memorable.
1. Immortality

The comic series The Immortal Hulk definitively showed that the Hulk cannot be permanently killed. Hulk, and anyone affected by gamma radiation, can return to life through a mysterious realm called the Green Door. Longtime Hulk fans know Bruce Banner has ‘died’ more often than any other Avenger, and this is due to the special nature of gamma radiation, allowing him to repeatedly return. It’s a bit unsettling, but it’s a very powerful ability.
