2026 is looking like another great year for horror movies, but which ones are performing best at the box office? Unlike big-budget blockbusters in other genres, horror films often succeed with smaller budgets. This means even a moderately successful horror movie can be very profitable.
Normally, $50 million isn’t much money for a movie at the box office. But if a film only costs $10 million or less to make, it doesn’t need to earn a huge amount to be profitable. Horror movies have always operated with tight budgets, and that’s especially true in recent years. While there are no guarantees, successful horror films have become increasingly common.
Although 2026 isn’t on track to match the incredible box office numbers of horror films in 2025, we’re already seeing some positive trends. Popular horror franchises are performing well, and smaller, independent films are unexpectedly gaining attention. Perhaps the biggest surprise so far this year has been the success of horror movies created by filmmakers who started on YouTube.
Lots of promising movies are on the way, and we’re likely to see some surprise hits before the end of the year. With 2026 already halfway over, horror movies are doing incredibly well, both in terms of how much money they’re making and what critics are saying. It’s great to see quality horror films climbing the box office charts.
5. Iron Lung (2025) – $50 Million
Okay, so Markiplier – you probably know him from his gaming videos – really surprised me with his directorial debut, Iron Lung. It’s based on a pretty creepy indie game, and honestly, it feels like a love letter to films like Alien. The whole thing is incredibly claustrophobic, and that’s intentional. What’s even more amazing? It was made for just $3 million! Considering the atmosphere and tension he builds, that’s a seriously impressive feat. It really punches above its weight.
Strong word-of-mouth and a popular YouTuber helped Iron Lung earn over $50 million in theaters, making it a very profitable film. Despite its low production cost, it quickly climbed the charts, landing among the top 5 movies of the first half of 2026. It remains to be seen if it can maintain that position throughout the year.
Even if Iron Lung doesn’t stay among the top horror hits, it’s likely to be one of the most financially successful of the year. With more movies created by YouTubers gaining popularity in 2026, Iron Lung could be starting a new and interesting direction for horror films. Regardless of the movie’s overall quality, the unique story of how it was made makes it a compelling watch.
4. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) – $58 Million
Released alongside 28 Years Later in 2025, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is the second film in a planned trilogy. This continuation of the zombie series expands on the world first established in 2002, introducing fresh ideas and characters. Despite reaching the top 5 at the box office for horror films, The Bone Temple wasn’t considered a major success.
Nia DaCosta’s film earned a respectable $58 million, but it didn’t perform well financially considering its $63 million production budget. When factoring in marketing and other expenses, The Bone Temple lost a significant amount of money and was considered a box office failure. In contrast, 28 Years Later earned over $150 million last year.
While the previous film wasn’t a huge success, the sudden drop in earnings for this installment is unexpected. Critics actually liked The Bone Temple more than previous films, so the problem isn’t the movie’s quality. These disappointing box office numbers have put the next film at risk, and it’s now uncertain whether the 28 Years Later trilogy will ever be finished.
3. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026) – $89 Million
While still playing in a few cinemas, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has largely finished its theatrical run just a month after it came out. This new and surprising version of the classic mummy tale boasts a star-studded cast and comes from the creators of films like The Invisible Man and Wolf Man. It’s a smart horror movie project – relatively inexpensive to make with the potential for big returns.
Despite costing only $20 million to make, the movie has already earned $89 million. That’s a good profit, even after factoring in the cost of a big marketing push. However, it probably won’t be the massive success the filmmakers were aiming for, as critics haven’t been very impressed and some viewers have found the story and how it’s told a bit confusing.
Reviews for the new Mummy film have been overwhelmingly negative, with most critics pointing to its excessive length and reliance on shocking, unpleasant imagery. A major issue seems to be that the film doesn’t connect to either the original 1930s Mummy movies or the more recent action-horror series with Brendan Fraser, leaving audiences confused about what to expect.
2. Send Help (2026) – $94 Million
With Send Help, Sam Raimi returns to pure horror after a 14-year break since Drag Me to Hell, and fans will be glad he did. This isn’t a supernatural story, but a tense and funny survival horror film. Released in January without a big franchise behind it, the movie gained attention through positive buzz and the reputations of its director and lead actor.
Although the $40 million horror movie is currently the second highest-grossing of 2026, its profit isn’t as large as it seems. While it earned $94 million, a significant budget and marketing expenses likely reduced the overall profit. Despite this, Send Help performed well considering it was released in what’s known as a slower month for movies.
1. Scream 7 (2026) – $207 Million
Considering the horror movies that have done well in theaters so far in 2026, Scream 7 isn’t a surprise hit. The Scream series, which began 30 years ago, has proven remarkably resilient. Even though the film faced some production issues and controversy, fans still turned out to see it.
With earnings exceeding $200 million on a $45 million budget, Scream 7 was a financial success. Surprisingly, it even earned more than the previous film, despite the absence of stars like Jenna Ortega. This all but confirms that we’ll see another Scream movie in the future. The big question now is whether another horror film will take Scream 7‘s place as the highest-grossing horror movie of the year.
