The first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe all led to the arrival of Thanos, a powerful villain who threatened the entire world. Heroes from all sides had to unite in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame to try and defeat him. Once Thanos collected all six Infinity Stones, he became nearly all-powerful, but even before that, he was an incredibly formidable opponent. The very beginning of Infinity War demonstrated his immense strength when he easily defeated the Hulk.
Marvel fans are eagerly debating how Victor von Doom, the big bad guy in the next two Avengers movies – Doomsday and Secret Wars – will stack up against Thanos in terms of power. In the comics, Doom actually killed Thanos, which suggests he could be the most powerful villain the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen. However, the MCU has already featured a handful of villains who were even more powerful than Thanos.
Dormammu Existed Beyond Time and Space in the MCU
The villain in the first Doctor Strange movie, Kaecilius, wasn’t the real threat. He was actually working for Dormammu, a powerful and terrifying being who rules the Dark Dimension. Wong described Dormammu as having limitless power and an insatiable hunger, and Karl Mordo believed nothing could defeat him. Even the combined magical skills of the sorcerers at Kamar-Taj couldn’t stop Dormammu’s attack.
Doctor Strange instead used the Eye of Agamotto to repeatedly trap Dormammu in a time loop until the powerful being became annoyed and abandoned his plan to conquer Earth. It’s hard to say exactly how strong Dormammu is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he didn’t achieve much beyond killing Doctor Strange multiple times during a learning experience. However, if his power is anywhere near what it is in the comics, he’s one of the biggest dangers to the entire Marvel multiverse.
Scarlet Witch Nearly Killed Thanos in Avengers: Endgame
Before becoming a villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, actually confronted Thanos and demonstrated a clear advantage in power. During the battle for Earth, she used her telekinetic abilities to disarm and lift Thanos, even beginning to physically harm him. He visibly showed fear and desperation, and only managed to escape when he commanded his army to attack, even if it meant sacrificing many of his own soldiers.
After the events of Endgame, Wanda became increasingly powerful. The series WandaVision revealed that her grief over losing Vision unleashed her Chaos Magic, and by the end, she mastered its full potential. In Multiverse of Madness, she was so strong that not even Doctor Strange or the powerful group known as the Illuminati from another universe could defeat her. Ultimately, she chose to end her own life after recognizing how dangerous she had become.
The Void Made His Enemies Vanish Without the Infinity Gauntlet
Even though the heroes in Thunderbolts seemed fairly normal, the story included one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful villains: the Void, who is the evil side of the hero known as Sentry. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine described Sentry as unbelievably strong – “more powerful than all the Avengers combined.” While she might have been exaggerating to make him sound impressive, Sentry quickly proved her point by easily defeating the Thunderbolts.
The Void was just as powerful as the hero he opposed, and he could make people vanish with a simple gesture, leaving only dark outlines behind. While Thanos’s attack affected half the universe, the Void’s was limited to one city, and he didn’t need the Infinity Gauntlet to do it. Unlike Thanos, using his power didn’t seem to harm the Void physically; the Infinity Stones actually wounded Thanos.
Galactus Used the Power Cosmic to Consume Entire Planets
The story The Fantastic Four: First Steps first introduced Galactus, a powerful being known as the Devourer of Worlds. Similar to the comic books, Galactus wasn’t always so powerful – he began as a normal person who gained immense cosmic abilities. By the time First Steps takes place, he’s already existed for billions of years and destroyed numerous planets because of his endless hunger. His herald, the Silver Surfer, though possessing only a fraction of Galactus’s power, could circle the Earth in moments and disable all teleportation systems, demonstrating just how strong Galactus truly is.
The Fantastic Four couldn’t actually beat Galactus; they only bought some time by sending him far away. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos came closest to destroying a planet on Titan, where he broke a moon and used the pieces as weapons – but he only did that after collecting four of the six Infinity Stones.
Arishem the Judge Existed Before the Infinity Stones
The Celestials are among the oldest beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perhaps only surpassed by Eternity from Thor: Love and Thunder. Arishem the Judge, the leading Celestial, is responsible for starting the Big Bang and creating the very first star. He’s even more powerful than Galactus because he doesn’t need to eat planets to survive and can instantly travel anywhere in the universe by creating wormholes.
The floating space station Knowhere, from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, is actually built on the head of a deceased Celestial being, proving they aren’t immortal. However, nothing we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shown anything capable of truly destroying one. According to the beginning of the Eternals movie, Celestials existed long before the Infinity Stones, suggesting the Stones wouldn’t affect them. This means Arishem is the only villain in the MCU that Thanos probably couldn’t have beaten, even with all six Infinity Stones.
