One of the Best Unadapted Comic Books of All Time is Finally Getting a TV Series

Marvel and DC dominate the superhero movie and TV landscape, often overshadowing independent comic book adaptations. But shows like Invincible and The Boys, both big hits on Prime Video, prove that smaller comics can find a large audience. Streaming services have also helped other non-Marvel/DC titles gain recognition, including Locke & Key, The Umbrella Academy, and well-known series like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spawn. Recently, the creator of another popular comic announced it’s being adapted for television, which is exciting news for fans.

I’m so thrilled to hear that Rob Guillory’s incredible comic, Chew, is officially becoming a live-action TV show! He shared the news on social media – though the post has since been taken down – and said all the contracts are signed. He seems really happy to be working with the team at Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, and honestly, so am I! It’s been a secret for a while, but now it’s out, and I can’t wait to see it come to life.

What Can Fans Expect from Chew?

Chew is a comic book about Tony Chu, an FDA agent with a unique ability: he gets psychic flashes from whatever he eats. In his first case, eating chicken soup reveals a murder, and a taste of the chef’s tongue shows him all the victims – leading to his transfer from the Philadelphia PD to the FDA. The series features characters with various food-related powers, each activated by eating. It’s a wild mix of crime, sci-fi, and comedy, making it a great concept for a streaming show.

Rob Guillory and John Layman launched the comic book series ‘Chew’ with Image Comics in 2009, and it continued for 60 issues until 2016. During its run, ‘Chew’ received two Eisner Awards and two Harvey Awards, and the entire series was compiled into 12 trade paperbacks. An animated adaptation was planned in 2014, initially featuring Steven Yeun, Felicia Day, and Robin Williams. After Williams’ passing, David Tennant was cast in his role, but the animated series never came to fruition by 2017.

Details about the upcoming Chew adaptation are scarce, but Blumhouse is producing it with John Layman and Rob Guillory involved. Guillory has confirmed the project is happening, but isn’t able to share any further information. He even removed the original announcement from his social media, suggesting the studio wants to keep development quiet. This adaptation is one of several Image Comics titles heading to television; James Tynion IV’s WorldTr33 is planned for Netflix, and Matt Fraction’s Sex Criminals will be on Prime Video.
