This year has been fantastic for horror fans, with some unexpected films becoming huge hits. While everyone anticipated success for the new Scream and 28 Years Later, it was two smaller movies that really surprised audiences and topped the box office charts. Backrooms, adapted from the popular YouTube series, has already earned $248.4 million in just three weeks, and the surprise hit Obsession has exceeded $286.4 million in five weeks. Luckily, there are five more major horror releases scheduled before summer ends – two are continuations of established franchises, and three are potential underdogs hoping to follow in the footsteps of Obsession and Backrooms and become unexpected blockbusters.
In addition to the latest installments in the Insidious and Evil Dead series, here’s a look at the other significant horror movies that came out this summer.
5) Ice Cream Man

Eli Roth, known for his uneven but often thrilling horror films, has a new movie coming out in 2026. His most recent theatrical release was the video game adaptation Borderlands in 2024, and before that, the holiday horror film Thanksgiving in 2023. His upcoming film, Ice Cream Man, appears to be in a similar vein to Thanksgiving, featuring a serial killer terrorizing a small American town.
A new horror film centers around an ice cream man who comes to town with a terrifying secret: his treats turn children into killers. Unlike the darkly comedic slasher Thanksgiving, this movie appears to be a wild, infection-based story where kids go on a violent rampage. The trailer promises a shockingly graphic and bloody experience. Ice Cream Man hits theaters August 7th.
4) Insidious: Out of the Further

Insidious: Out of the Further is the latest installment in the Insidious series, coming after 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door. While The Red Door—directed by actor Patrick Wilson—didn’t receive good reviews, the filmmakers are optimistic that this new movie will be better received. Out of the Further continues the story from The Red Door and features Lin Shaye reprising her role as Elise Rainier.
Most of the actors in this new installment are fresh faces, and the trailer introduces us to a different family and child experiencing a haunting. But this time, the story takes a unique turn: Elise warns the family they have the power to unintentionally bring demons into our world. The movie follows Elise as she tries to teach them how to prevent things from escalating. The new Insidious film hits theaters on August 21st.
3) Her Private Hell

Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming film, Her Private Hell, is expected to be the summer’s most divisive horror movie. Initial reactions from the 2026 Cannes Film Festival suggest it will likely appeal to his existing fans, but those unfamiliar with or dislike his previous work may not enjoy it. However, for those who appreciate Refn’s style, it could be a standout film of the year.
So, Nicolas Winding Refn is back with a new film after 2016’s The Neon Demon, and I’m really intrigued. It’s about a group of actresses staying at a fancy hotel, getting ready to film something like a Barbarella remake. But things get dark quickly because there’s a serial killer – they call him Leather Man – targeting women in the city. Honestly, it feels very much like a movie for those of us who already love Refn’s style, but it sounds like it could be the most compelling horror film we see all summer. It’s called Her Private Hell, and it comes out on July 24th.
2) Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

This summer’s most intriguing horror film is undoubtedly Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Directed by Jane Schoenbrun (known for I Saw the TV Glow), the movie stars Hannah Einbinder as Kris, a young queer filmmaker. Kris is tasked with reviving the classic horror film Camp Miasma and wants to cast the original star, Billy Preston, played by Gillian Anderson. Their collaboration quickly spirals into what’s been called a wild and intense psychosexual obsession.
The movie is receiving rave reviews, currently holding a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 53 critic reviews following its debut at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Critics have praised it as incredibly stylish and thrilling, a film that will both scare and provoke thought. Many are highlighting Anderson’s outstanding performance, predicting this could be one of the biggest horror films of the year. It opens in theaters on August 7th.
1) Evil Dead Burn

The Evil Dead series was revitalized with Evil Dead Rise, which traded much of its humor for intense horror and followed a family terrorized by Deadites in a city setting. Building on that success, Evil Dead Burn, scheduled for release in 2026, promises to continue the franchise’s gritty and terrifying new path.
After a woman’s husband passes away, she goes to her in-laws’ remote home for comfort – but that’s where the terrifying Deadites strike again. The trailer for Evil Dead Burn promises the same intense gore and scares fans have come to expect from recent films in the series, suggesting the gruesome story will continue with full force. You can see Evil Dead Burn in theaters on July 10th.
