2025 brought some surprising and tragic deaths in Marvel Studios’ projects. Across eight releases – including the films Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as well as five TV series – several characters didn’t make it to the end. These stories unfolded both within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616) and across alternate realities.
Several characters deserve recognition for their impactful deaths, including Hector Ayala’s White Tiger (played by Kamar de los Reyes), Natalie Washington (Lyric Ross), John (Manny Montana), and Achilles (Adam Gold), as well as many heroes from Marvel Zombies. While these characters all perished in Marvel Studios projects slated for 2025, five deaths were especially surprising, shocking, or disturbing. With more shows and movies like Wonder Man, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, VisionQuest, The Punisher special, additional episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday planned for 2026, we can anticipate even more character deaths in the future of the MCU.
5) Taskmaster in Thunderbolts*

Most fans anticipated Antonia Dreykov, also known as Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), would eventually die in Thunderbolts, but her death came surprisingly early in the film. During the New Avengers’ initial meeting – orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and meant to pit the team against each other – Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) fatally shot Taskmaster. While it was disappointing to see Taskmaster killed before getting a chance to fully develop as a character in the MCU, some viewers won’t be sad to see this controversial character gone.
4) Commissioner Phil Gallo in Daredevil: Born Again

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again featured several shocking deaths, but the death of Commissioner Gallo (Michael Gaston) was particularly gruesome. In the season finale, Gallo publicly challenged Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) as he took control as Mayor of New York. This led to Kingpin brutally crushing Gallo’s head with his bare hands, demonstrating his immense strength and ruthlessness. The scene was shockingly violent and unexpected for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it has increased anticipation for the upcoming second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
3) Kate Bishop in Marvel Zombies

The animated series Marvel Zombies picks up the story from the What If…? episode “What If… Zombies?!” (season 1, episode 4) which aired in 2021. The first episode focused on Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, and Kate Bishop. Sadly, Bishop died during an encounter with zombie versions of Captain Marvel and Ikaris, who were still fighting each other. Bishop attempted to use a special arrow on Captain Marvel, but this only enraged the zombie, who quickly killed the new Hawkeye. It was a surprising and swift end to Bishop’s story.
2) Sue Storm’s Invisible Woman in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Most fans didn’t anticipate any deaths in the reboot of Marvel’s Fantastic Four. However, the film The Fantastic Four: First Steps surprisingly featured a major sacrifice: Sue Storm (played by Vanessa Kirby) gave her life to expose Galactus (Ralph Ineson). Thankfully, her son, Franklin Richards, who possesses incredible cosmic power, was able to bring her back. Vanessa Kirby is set to continue playing the Invisible Woman in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films, starting with Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, but her willingness to sacrifice everything for her family was still a powerful and unexpected moment.
1) Foggy Nelson in Daredevil: Born Again

Fans were excited to see Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll reprise their roles as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page in the new Daredevil: Born Again series. However, the very first episode, “Heaven’s Half Hour,” shocked viewers with Foggy’s sudden death at the hands of the villain Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). It was soon revealed that Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) had orchestrated the hit, effectively breaking the uneasy truce between Kingpin and Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Foggy’s death deeply impacts Daredevil’s journey throughout the series, and will continue to do so – though many hope Marvel will find a way to bring the character back.
