As the year ends, streaming services are updating their content. New movies and shows are being added, but older titles are being removed – sometimes moving to other platforms, and sometimes disappearing temporarily. Fans of a popular 1980s film need to act fast, as it’s leaving both Netflix and HBO Max soon.
Get ready to say goodbye to The Goonies on streaming! The classic 1985 adventure film will be leaving both Netflix and HBO Max on January 1st. That gives subscribers until December 31st to watch it. Interestingly, the movie just became available on both platforms recently – HBO Max added it on December 1st and Netflix in October, making its time on streaming quite brief. Directed by Richard Donner and starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and others, The Goonies follows a group of kids in Oregon who find a treasure map and embark on an adventure to save their homes. It’s a much-loved film, so fans will want to watch it before it’s gone!
The Goonies May Be Leaving Netflix and HBO Max, But a Sequel is Finally On The Way
Even though The Goonies is temporarily leaving streaming services, fans don’t need to worry – a sequel is in the works! The original film, released 40 years ago, is finally getting a follow-up. While specific details are still limited, development was first reported in January and confirmed in April. Ke Huy Quan recently shared that a second draft of the script has already been submitted, which is a positive sign for the project.
Everyone is eager to see how fans react to the new Goonies movie. The first film was a major success, earning $125 million despite costing only $19 million to make, and it was loved by both audiences and critics. The Library of Congress even recognized its cultural importance by adding it to the National Film Registry, meaning the sequel has a lot to live up to. In the meantime, fans can re-watch the original on Netflix and HBO Max.
