Choosing the best book in the Absolute Universe series is tough, but I think Absolute Martian Manhunter is the standout title. Published as part of the second wave of these books, it differs significantly from its original counterpart. Instead of being a traditional alien from Mars, the Martian Manhunter in this version is a psychic being from another dimension. It bonds with FBI agent John Jones and together they investigate unusual, otherworldly occurrences in Jones’s city.
Okay, so everyone’s been raving about Absolute Martian Manhunter, and honestly, I’ve been one of those people – it’s easily one of the best things DC’s done in ages. It’s a bummer, but the writer, Camp, just announced it’s ending with issue twelve later this year, though he’s hinted at a possible return someday. Still, it’s a real loss! If you haven’t jumped on board yet, let me tell you five reasons why you absolutely need to read Absolute Martian Manhunter before it’s over.
5. Creative Use of the Medium

I immediately knew this comic book was something different. The first issue included a clever trick that only worked with the physical copy. The creators came up with one of the series’ most memorable scenes to demonstrate the Martian’s powers – ‘Martian Vision’. Readers could reveal the Martian was inside Jones’ body by shining a light through the page and seeing both sides simultaneously. The series has used this technique a few times, and it really highlights how experimental and mind-bending this book is.
4. Unique Art and Design

Javier Rodríguez’s stunning artwork and colors are a huge reason this book is so captivating. He’s been the artist and colorist for every issue, and though that meant a four-month delay, it was worth it to maintain the series’ distinctive look and feel. I often have trouble expressing how much I appreciate artists, but in this case, I can’t praise Rodríguez enough. His work elevates Camp’s writing, creating a book that really shines within the Absolute Universe lineup.
3. Amazing Tone and Atmosphere

What makes this book so appealing – to me and many others – is that despite being published as part of a superhero series, it doesn’t read like one at all. It’s more of a thought-provoking crime story that delves into what it means to be human and how we connect with each other. It genuinely feels like a story from the best of the original Vertigo comics, updated for today’s readers. If you’re looking for something different within the Absolute line, this is it.
2. The Relationship Between John and the Martian

Splitting the characters of Martian Manhunter and John Jones was a brilliant move. It created a fantastic tension that really propels the story, especially with all the strange events unfolding around Jones. Jones is a relatable character who’s struggling with personal connections, while the Martian embodies complete understanding and unity. This contrast gives us the classic ‘buddy cop’ dynamic found in many crime stories, but with a unique, otherworldly twist. It works incredibly well.
1. The Overall Message

Okay, so Absolute Martian Manhunter is definitely a trip, I’ll admit that upfront. But beyond the really unique take on J’onn J’onzz, it’s actually a surprisingly thoughtful book. It really digs into what it means to be human – all our faults and the things that keep us from truly understanding each other. It’s a story about how much it hurts to feel alone, and how good it feels to really open up. Honestly, in a world that feels more and more fractured, this book is a powerful reminder that there’s strength in vulnerability, and maybe, just maybe, that’s what we need right now.
