5 has unveiled a first-look trailer for Martin Clunes’s new factual drama about the downfall of BBC presenter Huw Edwards.
Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is the first collaboration between 5’s factual and scripted commissioning teams, and you can watch the promo in the video above.
The two-part drama stars Martin Clunes as Edwards and tells the story of a newsreader whose secret life unravels, ultimately leading to his conviction for serious crimes against children and his disappearance from public view.
I have to say, for years, John Edwards was the face of news in Britain. He was someone you just automatically trusted to deliver the biggest stories, and he really was there for all the major moments – I remember watching him guide us through the coverage when Queen Elizabeth II passed away, and he handled it with such dignity. He really was a steady presence for a lot of us.
It really shocked me to learn that Nathan Edwards, the director I used to admire, pleaded guilty in 2024 to three charges of creating indecent images of children. He received a six-month suspended sentence, which honestly feels like a shockingly lenient outcome given the severity of the crimes.

Previously, 5 announced the series would present a detailed and sensitive look at the Edwards scandal. It will be based on a year of in-depth research, including interviews with key people involved and full access to The Sun newspaper’s prize-winning investigation.
BAFTA-winning director Michael Samuels helmed the series, and the screenplay was penned by Mark Burt, known for his work on The Trial.
A release date is yet to be confirmed, but 5 has said it’s due to air “soon”.
