Throughout the Infinity Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man became a hugely important character. As the first hero audiences met, it’s fitting that he evolved into a central figure in later films. A key member of the Avengers and a leader among the heroes, Tony Stark accomplished incredible things, consistently holding his own against powerful enemies, even when outmatched. He achieved this thanks to his constantly evolving, high-tech Iron Man armor, which he continually improved throughout his time in the MCU.
As a longtime follower of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve watched Tony Stark evolve through countless iterations of his Iron Man armor. While some suits just look cooler than others, I’ve been putting together a list of the most powerful ones, based on what we actually see them do in the films. It’s tough, because Marvel often hints at capabilities without fully showing them off, but these are the suits that consistently impressed me with their raw power and functionality throughout the Infinity Saga.
5) Mark XLV

The Mark XLV armor is the suit Iron Man uses in Avengers: Age of Ultron, most notably during the fight in Sokovia. Although it’s not Tony Stark’s most technologically advanced suit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s still a very capable combat suit as shown in the film. It can fire a powerful unibeam that even harms Ultron, and it withstands a lot of damage during the battle. While not his ultimate armor, it’s definitely strong enough to fight a powerful enemy like Ultron.
4) Mark XLVI

While it doesn’t immediately stand out, Iron Man’s Mark XLVI armor from Captain America: Civil War is actually one of his most impressive suits. It allowed Tony Stark to fight effectively against multiple opponents, and even hold his own against both Captain America and the Winter Soldier at the same time. Considering it could match the combined strength of two super-soldiers and the rest of Team Cap, the Mark XLVI was a truly powerful piece of technology.
3) Hulkbuster

The Hulkbuster armor, first appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, is a clear standout upgrade to Iron Man’s suits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Designed to fight the Hulk, it’s arguably Tony Stark’s most visually striking armor. Bruce Banner even uses it to fight Thanos, demonstrating its incredible power. However, despite its imposing size and strength, the Hulkbuster’s bulkiness limits Tony’s movement and agility more than some of his other suits.
2) Mark L

The Mark L armor is definitely one of the most visually striking Iron Man suits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Featured in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s remarkable for its ability to keep Tony Stark alive in the vacuum of space and even allow him to briefly fight Thanos, even when Thanos had several Infinity Stones. While not necessarily his strongest suit, it’s easily among Tony Stark’s best.
1) Mark LXXXV

The Mark LXXXV is the armor Iron Man uses in Avengers: Endgame. It’s a significant upgrade from the Mark L, improved over five years with new technology. While we don’t see all the changes, this nanotech armor can contain and use all six Infinity Stones. This makes it the most powerful Iron Man suit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s particularly memorable as the one Tony Stark wears during his final, heroic act.
