The first PlayStation was a huge hit for Sony, instantly making them a major player in the video game industry alongside Nintendo and Sega. Like many games from that time, it featured some incredibly challenging titles. But a few levels were notoriously difficult, causing frustration, broken controllers, and even tears! These levels were so tough that many players couldn’t even progress past the beginning of the game.
Here are the six hardest games on the original PlayStation.
6) Gran Turismo 2 – Millennium in Rome

The Gran Turismo series is known for being challenging, and its license tests can be incredibly difficult. But for a true test of skill and patience, the longer endurance races are where it’s at. Races like the 300km at Grand Valley Speedway will really push your limits – they’re among the most demanding challenges you’ll find in any game.
These races are really long, often taking around two hours to finish. Losing means starting all over, which can be incredibly frustrating. Even if you manage to complete a race without failing, it’s going to be a tough experience. They aren’t necessarily hard to understand, but they’ll really push your stamina to the limit.
5) Crash Bandicoot – The High Road

Once you learn the shortcut, The High Road becomes much easier. It does take some effort to figure it out, though. The trick is to jump onto the rope and carefully run across it to finish the road. It’s still possible to fall, but it’s a lot simpler than completing the road as intended.
Okay, so forget about the rope trick if you’re aiming for 100% on The High Road. Seriously, you’re gonna have to deal with some seriously tough platforming – like, classic PS1 frustrating tough. We’re talking jumps that just feel…off, and enemies that are constantly getting in your way. It’s a real challenge, that’s for sure!
4) Einhander – Stage 5

The PlayStation game Einhander was visually stunning for its time. While its beautiful graphics initially attract players, they’ll quickly find it incredibly challenging. Einhander is known for its relentless difficulty, with one tough level after another, and Stage 5 is where most players give up.
This level is packed with enemies, and it features the hardest midboss in the game. Once you overcome this challenge, the rest of the game will likely feel much easier. While the final bosses are still difficult, reaching them won’t be as much of a struggle after completing Stage 5.
3) Rayman – Space Mama’s Crater

The original Rayman has a strange flow to its difficulty. It starts off fairly easy, but then suddenly becomes much harder, especially in the level called Space Mama’s Crater. This level throws a series of incredibly challenging platforming sections at you one after another, with no rest in between. It truly feels overwhelming.
If you manage to get through the challenging earlier level, you’ll then face Space Mama, a boss considered by many to be the hardest in the game. The difficult level leading up to her makes the encounter even more frustrating, and many players believe Space Mama’s Crater is the most difficult area overall.
2) Driver – The Tutorial

As I mentioned earlier, one game on this list had a high return rate – many players didn’t even finish the tutorial. The reason? The beginning of Driver is notoriously difficult. The game immediately throws you into a small parking garage and asks you to perform a series of tricky maneuvers.
The game never teaches you how to do any of these tricks. If you didn’t know how to perform a Reverse 180, you were on your own. While online tutorials now make it easier to learn, back in the 90s you had to figure it out yourself. And even if you could do the tricks, you had to complete them quickly and avoid crashing into walls. It’s widely considered one of the most challenging levels ever designed.
1) Roll Away – Everything Past Level 140

I recently got into this cool little game called Roll Away (it’s known as Kula World outside of North America). Basically, you control a beach ball and try to roll it through a bunch of different levels. Honestly, the first 120 levels weren’t too bad. There are a few things you need to figure out, but it’s not overly challenging – definitely not frustratingly difficult!
As you progress, the developers at Game Design Sweden AB really ramp up the challenge. The final ten levels, especially 140 through 150, are incredibly difficult and require serious skill. They’re so closely linked in difficulty that it’s hard to even distinguish between them.
