Season 3 of House of the Dragon arrives next month, and it’s already clear the show will continue to take liberties with George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood. The series has significantly departed from the source material over its first two seasons, and Martin’s comments on the show, along with a strained relationship with showrunner Ryan Condal, have become a major topic of discussion. As the new season begins, the focus will return to the show itself, but viewers will inevitably notice how it differs from the original book.
To be fair, adapting Fire & Blood isn’t easy. It’s not a typical novel; it’s presented as a historical text from the world of the story, written as if by a scholar using various, often contradictory, sources. This means the show has had to make its own choices about what happened and expand on the characters and plot significantly.
Not all theories are equally convincing, and that trend will continue in future episodes. The recently released trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3, combined with events from Season 2 and a recent casting announcement, suggest significant changes are coming. While there are many alterations, both large and small, some will be particularly impactful. Be warned: This contains spoilers from the Fire & Blood book. We’re focusing on information confirmed through footage or official reports, not unverified set leaks.
6) Rhaena & Baela Targaryen Replacing Nettles

In Fire & Blood, Nettles is a dragonrider candidate who attempts to bond with the wild dragon Sheepstealer. However, the season two finale of House of the Dragon strongly implied that Rhaena Targaryen would be the one to claim the dragon instead. The trailer for season three confirms this, showing Sheepstealer flying with Rhaena around the Mountains of the Moon in the Vale, indicating they have successfully bonded.
In addition to Rhaena, her sister Baela appears to be taking on some of Nettles’ storyline. During the Battle of the Gullet – a major naval battle in Season 3 between the Velaryon fleet and the Triarchy – Nettles is shown fighting on her dragon, alongside Jacaerys Velaryon (on Vermax), Hugh Hammer (on Vermithor), and Ulf White (on Silverwing). Although Sheepstealer isn’t featured in the show, trailers reveal Baela riding Moondancer in this battle instead.
5) Daemon Targaryen Fighting In Multiple Battles

Leaving out the character Nettles impacts not only Rhaena and Baela, but especially their father, Daemon. A significant part of his storyline at this time revolves around her. After helping Rhaenyra claim King’s Landing, he’s tasked with finding Aemond Targaryen in the Riverlands, and during this search, he develops a very close relationship with Nettles. Some accounts describe this bond as fatherly, with Daemon being very affectionate towards her, while others suggest a romantic connection. This relationship also contributes to Rhaenyra’s increasing distrust and suspicion.
It doesn’t look like that will be part of the show’s storyline. The story seems to be focusing on Daemon’s daughters instead, and we haven’t seen Rhaena or Baela with him in the Riverlands yet. Instead, the show is portraying Daemon as a military leader, commanding forces alongside allies from houses Tully and Stark.
Season 3 of the show will cover several important battles from Fire & Blood, like Fishfeed and Butcher’s Ball, but Daemon Targaryen isn’t involved in those events within the book. The trailer also shows a meeting between the characters and Lord Ormund’s army, which is a new addition created for the series.
4) How Rhaenyra Takes King’s Landing

The second season of House of the Dragon ended by setting up a potentially surprising turn of events, and it will be fascinating to see how it unfolds. In the finale, Alicent Hightower went to Dragonstone and promised to allow Rhaenyra to enter King’s Landing and claim the Iron Throne. Promotional materials for Season 3 suggest Rhaenyra still expects Alicent to keep her word, and also hint that Rhaenyra will eventually take control of the Red Keep.
It’s unclear if Alicent will actually follow through on her promise. She might have a change of heart, or Aemond could find out what she’s planning and act on his own. Either way, this will differ from the book, where Alicent and Rhaenyra never had this meeting or made any such agreement.
Instead of securing the city themselves, she and Daemon fly over on dragons while soldiers loyal to Team Black take control of the capital. This could play out very differently than in the book – the specific circumstances, who’s present, and the consequences for Alicent could all significantly alter the story’s direction.
3) Aegon Wanting Revenge On Aemond

In Season 2 of House of the Dragon, a pivotal moment occurred during the Battle at Rook’s Rest when Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar, intentionally attacked and severely wounded King Aegon II Targaryen and his dragon, Sunfyre. This act sets the stage for Season 3, as the trailer reveals Aegon is now consumed by a desire for revenge against Aemond, declaring, “I’m going to kill my brother, or die trying.”
This new storyline dramatically changes the events of the Dance of the Dragons. While the original story focused on his fight against Rhaenyra, it’s now clear his main goal is revenge against his brother, whom he blames for all his misfortunes.
This fits with how the show portrays Aegon, who didn’t actually want to be king. Considering he suffered a gruesome injury—described vividly as resembling a bursting sausage—due to Aemond’s actions, his behavior is understandable. However, it’s hard to predict where this storyline will go, or how much conflict can develop between Aegon and Aemond, as their individual paths might limit their interactions.
2) The Second Jaehaera Targaryen

Reports indicate that the character Jaehaera Targaryen, daughter of Aegon and Helaena, will be portrayed by two different actresses. Lulu Barker will play Jaehaera as a toddler, continuing from Season 3, and Pearl Clark will play her as a 10-year-old. While this suggests a possible time jump in the story, it’s probably not a major one, as that would be a drastic change for the series.
Another possibility is that we’ll see Jaehaera in a vision or dream experienced by Helaena. In the books, Jaehaera dies by suicide around age ten, and it’s likely the show will depict Helaena witnessing this event, potentially influencing her own tragic decision. This could happen in Season 4, but George R.R. Martin mentioned in a blog post that Helaena’s death was originally planned for Season 3 in earlier script drafts.
1) Helaena Targaryen Seemingly Giving Birth

A significant part of Helaena Targaryen’s death in the book involves her son, Prince Maelor, but he was seemingly removed from the show. However, according to the source material, Fire & Blood, Maelor is crucial to the story – specifically, the ‘Blood and Cheese’ incident where Helaena is forced to choose which of her sons lives. Since he wasn’t shown being born earlier in the series, it seemed impossible to include him, but the trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 shows Helaena in labor, leading fans to wonder if she’s giving birth to Maelor.
If the baby is actually Prince Jaehaerys, it seems likely he’ll be killed off quickly for dramatic effect. However, this would also complicate the conflict between Aegon and Aemond, as it would confirm the king has an heir. Alternatively, the show could introduce another miscarriage, one of Helaena’s prophetic visions, or even a vision shown to Aemond by someone else, like Alys Rivers. But these possibilities aren’t based on the book, so it remains to be seen how the story unfolds.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21st, 2026.
