The 1980s were a fantastic time for movies, and science fiction films really stood out. Sci-fi has always been a popular genre, especially in cinema, with many films becoming iconic parts of our culture. While great sci-fi movies have been made in every decade, the 1980s were particularly strong. Advances in special effects combined with increasingly sophisticated stories allowed for some truly memorable and captivating films that resonated with audiences worldwide.
The 1980s produced a wealth of fantastic science fiction films, many of which are surprisingly overlooked. However, several classics from that decade still hold up beautifully today. In fact, some of the best sci-fi movies from the ’80s are just as enjoyable—and even more impressive—now as they were over forty years ago, solidifying their status as true cinematic gems.
7) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Considered a flawless science fiction film of the 1980s, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has charmed audiences for decades. Its touching story of a boy’s friendship with an alien has deeply impacted the sci-fi genre and cemented its place as a timeless favorite. E.T. remains captivating and is widely considered one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made.
6) Ghostbusters (1984)

Several Ghostbusters movies have been made, but the 1984 original remains the best. With Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the ghostbusting team, and featuring Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the film is considered a classic of the 1980s. It brilliantly balanced a unique sci-fi premise with thrilling action and hilarious, memorable lines. Looking back, Ghostbusters still stands out, as none of the sequels have reached the same level of quality.
5) Back to the Future (1985)

Many consider Back to the Future one of the most enjoyable sci-fi movies ever made, and its impact on the genre is undeniable. It’s often praised for bringing time travel stories to a wider audience, and its appeal spans generations, which is remarkable given the complicated science behind it. The film’s ability to captivate viewers of all ages – even those who don’t typically enjoy sci-fi – has solidified its place as a beloved 1980s classic that continues to resonate with audiences today.
4) Predator (1987)

Predator is considered one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s greatest sci-fi films and launched a hugely successful franchise. Beyond its thrilling action and horror, the movie explored surprisingly thoughtful themes, all while showcasing a hyper-masculine group of heroes, which made the alien Predator even more frightening. Over time, many viewers have come to recognize Predator not just as an exciting action movie, but as a subtly brilliant piece of storytelling.
3) Blade Runner (1982)

While Ridley Scott has made other great sci-fi films, Blade Runner remains a standout. Based on Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, it’s famous for its stunning vision of the future, which still looks incredible today. Even though the movie’s predictions about technology haven’t come true, its visuals are truly exceptional. Over forty years later, Blade Runner is still a beautiful and thought-provoking film that continues to impress.
2) The Thing (1982)

Often ranked among John Carpenter’s greatest films, The Thing remains incredibly influential, not only in science fiction and horror, but in popular culture as a whole. The film brilliantly explores feelings of paranoia and loneliness, but it’s the remarkably realistic visual effects that have allowed it to endure. The use of practical effects, rather than relying on computer-generated imagery, is a major reason why The Thing is still considered a classic today.
1) Aliens (1986)

As a huge sci-fi fan, I always thought the original Alien was fantastic, but a lot of people – and I’d agree – think Aliens actually tops it. Released in 1986, it really ramped up the action while still keeping that terrifying atmosphere, just on a much bigger, more explosive scale. Honestly, revisiting Aliens now, it still holds up as one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made, and it feels like its reputation only gets stronger with time.
