7 Best Superhero Teams Not in DC Or Marvel

Superhero teams often define a comic book company and showcase its most popular characters. The Justice League from DC and the Avengers from Marvel are great examples – they bring together each company’s biggest heroes to fight their toughest enemies. But DC and Marvel aren’t the only publishers with these powerful groups. Companies like Image, Dark Horse, and IDW also have their own teams of strong heroes who work together to save the world. These teams have compelling relationships and, while they might not be as well-known, they’re essential to the worlds their companies have created.

Here are some of the best superhero teams you can find outside of DC and Marvel Comics. We’ve left out teams like WildC.A.T.s and the Authority, though, because they’re now officially part of the DC universe.

7) Unity

Valiant Comics, similar to Marvel and DC, assembled a team featuring their most popular heroes. Called Unity, this team first appeared during Valiant’s peak in the 2010s and marked the company’s first large-scale crossover event. Originally formed by the government to stop the powerful hero X-O Manowar, the team was surprised when he changed sides and joined them. Over time, Unity has included heroes like Ninjak, Eternal Warrior, Faith, GIN_GR, Livewire, Bloodshot, and Toyo Harada. Bringing these diverse and compelling characters together to battle evil was a landmark moment for Valiant, and Unity is considered the premier superhero team in their universe.

6) The Scorched

Spawn, Image Comics’ original and most popular superhero, spent years battling forces of both Heaven and Hell, usually working solo. But as the world of Spawn grew in the early 2020s, a new team emerged called the Scorched. This group, made up of both familiar and new characters, combines Hellspawn and other supernatural heroes to tackle threats too big for any one person. While Spawn is a major figure, She-Spawn leads the team because she’s uniquely equipped to manage such a collection of troubled, reluctant heroes. With members like Gunslinger Spawn, Medieval Spawn, Haunt, Redeemer, and Jim Downing, the Scorched represent the strongest heroic alliance in the Spawn Universe.

5) Honor Guard

In Image Comics’ Astro City, a vibrant world of heroes and villains, the Honor Guard is a particularly notable team. Formed in 1959, this group has consistently fought against various threats, from supervillains to aliens. Key members like the Samaritan, Winged Victory, Hummingbird, M.P.H., the Gentleman, and Cleopatra all have their own relatable flaws, but remain inspiring figures of hope and integrity within the city. Despite their imperfections, the Honor Guard consistently embodies what it means to be true heroes.

4) League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is like a Victorian-era version of the Avengers, bringing together famous characters from classic literature. In late 19th-century Britain, the government formed this team to defend the country against threats ranging from criminal geniuses like James Moriarty to actual invaders from Mars. Led by the vampire Mina Murray, the League includes adventurers like Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, and the conflicted Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. While the League’s members aren’t traditional heroes – they often operate in a morally complex way – they ultimately overcome their personal issues and work together to save the world.

3) B.P.R.D.

In a world plagued by monsters and demons, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.R.P.D.) is a secret government agency dedicated to protecting humanity. Founded by Trevor Bruttenholm, who became Hellboy’s adoptive father, the B.R.P.D. investigates paranormal activity and acts as a line of defense against supernatural threats. Though they function as investigators and government agents, the agency’s many superpowered members often find themselves acting as heroes. Alongside Hellboy, popular characters like Abe Sapien, Elizabeth Sherman, Johann Kraus, and Ben Daimio are all key members of the team. The B.R.P.D. successfully combines the secretive nature of organizations like Men in Black with the world of the occult.

2) Guardians of the Globe

Originally, the Guardians of the Globe—the main superhero team in the Invincible Universe—felt like a copy of the Justice League. But after Omni-Man destroyed the first team, the Guardians became much more complex and interesting. The third version of the team focused on being a truly global force, bringing together heroes from all over the world. Characters like Brit, Rex-Splode, Robot, Immortal, Monster Girl, Bulletproof, Best Tiger, Shapesmith, Knockout, and Kid Thor consistently fight to protect Earth, even when facing impossible challenges. The Guardians of the Globe are a cornerstone of Image Comics’ Invincible Universe, and have been key to its growing success.

1) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Besides the heroes from DC and Marvel, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are arguably the most well-known superheroes ever created. Starting as a humorous take on the superhero world with Mirage Comics, the Turtles quickly became a huge franchise spanning comics, cartoons, movies, and more. After being exposed to a special substance, four baby turtles were transformed into humanoid mutants. Raised by their rat sensei, Splinter, in the sewers of New York City, brothers Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello were trained as ninjas, becoming skilled fighters. Together, the TMNT fight enemies like the Shredder, the Foot Clan, and Kraang. Their unique blend of comedy, action, drama, and sci-fi/fantasy elements has kept them popular for decades, solidifying their place among the most iconic superheroes.
