7 Biggest Supervillain Rivalries in Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics is famous for the intense and dramatic conflicts between its most popular characters. These clashes aren’t just between heroes and villains; heroes often fight amongst themselves too. Given how quickly Marvel’s heroes turn on each other, it’s no surprise that the villains are even more competitive. Marvel’s criminal world is packed with villains battling for power, treasure, and the chance to defeat the heroes. Everyone wants to be the biggest threat, leading to bitter, long-running feuds that often put innocent bystanders in danger.

Supervillains are usually motivated by self-interest, and they’ll often betray other criminals to achieve their goals. Sometimes, their conflicts become deeply personal, leading to intense feuds where they try to harm each other and their families.

7) Doctor Doom and Kang the Conqueror

With Doctor Doom now positioned as the major villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes sense that he and Kang have a long-standing and fierce rivalry in the comics. As you might expect, their huge egos frequently cause them to clash as they both try to control the planet. Both Doom and Kang are incredibly intelligent, proud, and possess weapons powerful enough to destroy the Earth. They’ve repeatedly tried to prove who is smarter through elaborate plans and betrayals. Though they sometimes acknowledge each other’s power, ultimately they both believe only one of them can rule the Earth.

Thanos and Mephisto are two of Marvel’s most dangerous villains, both known for their cruelty. Despite this, whenever they attempt to collaborate, it always leads to betrayal. Mephisto, a skilled manipulator, has repeatedly tried to use Thanos for his own benefit, even acting as Thanos’ advisor during the Infinity Gauntlet Saga before attempting to steal the Infinity Gauntlet. However, Thanos consistently sees through Mephisto’s schemes and defeats him. This repeated failure has fueled Mephisto’s resentment towards Thanos, resulting in numerous conflicts over the years.

5) Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus

As a longtime Spider-Man fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the rivalry between the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus. It’s more than just two villains trying to take down our hero – it’s a constant power struggle between them. It started with a shared dislike for Spider-Man, a sort of begrudging respect for a common enemy. But things took a dark turn when the Green Goblin deliberately targeted Doc Ock’s personal life, pushing him over the edge. That betrayal fueled Doc Ock’s desire to not just defeat Spider-Man, but to one-up the Goblin. Even after Doc Ock’s whole ‘Superior Spider-Man’ phase and Norman Osborn’s attempts at redemption, that animosity hasn’t faded. They’re still at each other’s throats, and honestly, it makes for a compelling, layered conflict that keeps me invested in their story, even when they’re both being bad guys.

4) Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister

Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister have been enemies for hundreds of years. It all began in the 1800s when Apocalypse transformed the ruthless scientist Dr. Nathaniel Essex into the powerful mutant known as Mr. Sinister. Though forced to serve Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister attempted to kill his master with a dangerous techno-organic virus. When that failed, he spent centuries searching for a way to defeat him. Many of his cruel experiments on the Summers family, including the creation of Cable, were aimed at developing a mutant strong enough to finally destroy Apocalypse. However, Apocalypse always manages to survive and seeks revenge on his disloyal former servant.

3) Kree and Skrull Empires

The long-running war between the Kree and Skrull empires has profoundly impacted the entire Marvel Universe. The Kree possess incredible technology, while the Skrulls are masters of disguise, allowing them to take on any form. This ancient conflict has resulted in countless deaths and has often threatened Earth, as invading alien races typically seek to exploit our planet’s resources and location for their own war efforts. Even during periods of peace between the Kree and Skrulls, the threat of renewed conflict always looms.

Red Skull represents everything Magneto despises in humanity. Having survived the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp as a child and lost his family during the 1930s, Magneto carries the deep trauma of that experience. Red Skull was a prominent figure in the Nazi regime during World War II, embodying their hateful ideology. This makes Red Skull Magneto’s most hated enemy, and Magneto has repeatedly tried to capture and even kill Captain America’s foe. Seeing Red Skull instantly reminds Magneto of the millions of innocent Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust. This intense hatred confirms Red Skull’s status as one of Marvel’s most evil villains.

As a huge fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the dynamic between Venom and Carnage! It’s crazy to think that the sheer awfulness of Carnage actually pushed Venom into becoming something of a hero. It all started when Eddie Brock was in prison and ended up sharing a cell with the seriously disturbed Cletus Kasady. When Venom helped Eddie escape, a tiny piece of the symbiote was left behind, and that’s how Carnage was born. It’s wild because Venom used to be all about taking down Spider-Man, but once Carnage showed up, they actually teamed up to stop him! They’ve clashed so many times over the years, and it’s really turned Venom into this complex anti-hero. Honestly, with everything they’ve been through and how they both tie into Spider-Man’s world, Venom and Carnage have the ultimate father-son rivalry – it’s just epic!
