7 Forgotten Sci-Fi TV Shows That Are Actually Great, Ranked

Science fiction is a consistently popular genre, and many fantastic stories have been told on TV over the years. While some sci-fi shows become instant classics and stay with audiences for generations, others, despite being excellent, don’t achieve the same widespread recognition. The small screen has often been a great place for innovative sci-fi narratives, but not every good show becomes a cultural icon.

Many fantastic TV shows have unfortunately been overlooked and faded from memory, despite being well-made. Some were popular when they first aired but are now relatively unknown, while others never quite found the audience they deserved. Here are some excellent science fiction shows that deserve to be remembered, as they still offer great entertainment.

7) Defiance

The sci-fi series Defiance premiered in 2013 and lasted three seasons before being cancelled. The show presented a compelling story set in a post-apocalyptic future where Earth had been dramatically altered to support alien life. Though Defiance successfully blended science fiction and Western elements, it’s largely been overlooked since then, despite its creative concept and strong action-drama—qualities that deserve wider appreciation. It remains popular with its devoted fans, however.

6) Roswell

Though not completely forgotten, the TV show Roswell has become surprisingly obscure, especially considering how good it was and the dedicated fanbase it still has. The show centers around three aliens disguised as high school students, trying to fit in and conceal their powers. Roswell was a big hit because it combined science fiction with the typical dramas of teenage life, but it hasn’t remained widely known since it went off the air.

5) Lexx

Though largely forgotten today, Lexx was a truly unique sci-fi series that deserves a second look. The show centers around a quirky crew traveling the cosmos aboard Lexx, a living spaceship, as they journey between two alternate universes. Lexx cleverly mixes science fiction with mature humor and tackles surprisingly complex themes. It’s a remarkable and underappreciated piece of sci-fi television history.

4) Future Man

Despite being a clever and funny sci-fi show with a talented cast and the backing of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Future Man never gained a large following. The show centers around a janitor who’s unexpectedly tasked with saving the world because of his gaming abilities. Sadly, it was eventually taken off streaming services, leading many to overlook this hidden gem.

3) Colony

Many excellent science fiction shows don’t get the recognition they deserve, and Colony is a prime example. This series, which originally aired in 2016 and ran for three seasons before being cancelled, told a compelling story set in a near-future dystopia. It focused on a world where humanity was controlled by a powerful organization called the Transitional Authority, who were acting on behalf of mysterious alien beings known as the Hosts. Despite its strong story and engaging plot, Colony has unfortunately faded from memory.

2) Humans

Many consider Humans to be among the best science fiction shows of the 21st century, yet it often goes unnoticed. This British-American series features a talented cast and tells a compelling story about a world transformed by the creation of incredibly lifelike humanoid robots. Though it aired from 2015 to 2019, Humans doesn’t always receive the praise it deserves as a top-tier sci-fi television show.

1) Killjoys

The sci-fi series Killjoys centers around three bounty hunters working in a four-planet system called the Quad. It originally gained positive reviews and a dedicated fanbase thanks to its mix of science fiction and action. But over time, Killjoys has become somewhat overlooked, rarely receiving the recognition it deserves and largely forgotten by most viewers. It’s a hidden gem for those in the know.
