Although the Nova Corps is gone, Richard Ryder, also known as Nova, continues to honor their legacy in Marvel Comics. In the latest issue of Nova: Centurion #6, Nova faced a seemingly invincible enemy and demonstrated the full extent of the Nova powers – powers he now wields representing the entire Nova Corps. This isn’t a new concept, as former Nova Corps members have always been incredibly powerful, serving roles ranging from universal peacekeepers to messengers of Galactus, and even standing toe-to-toe with the strongest beings in the universe.
Here is a look at the most powerful Nova Corps in the history of Marvel Comics.
7) Jesse Alexander

Jesse Alexander used to be a member of the Nova Centurion corps, even serving with the Supernovas, their elite unit. He left and vanished, but actually came to Earth where he worked as a school custodian and raised a son named Sam. Despite starting a new life, Jesse battled PTSD from his time in the Nova Corps, and his struggles eventually overwhelmed him.
Jesse was a highly respected and essential member of the Black Novas, an intergalactic peacekeeping force. He gained his powers – the full abilities of the Nova Corps – through a special helmet, a legacy he passed on to his son, Sam. Though challenges later diminished his strength, Jesse demonstrated strong leadership and resilience by leading a rebellion against the Chitauri.
6) Sam Alexander

Okay, so the character Sam Alexander, or Nova as many know him, is a really compelling addition to the Marvel universe. He’s Jesse Alexander’s son, and basically stumbles into superpowers when he finds his dad’s old Nova Corps helmet. At first, being a young teenager with all this power is tough – he’s a bit clumsy, honestly. But with the help of his friends, he quickly learns to control things and proves he’s a true hero, eventually fighting alongside the Avengers and even leading his own team, the Champions. He really holds his own against even the most experienced heroes, which is pretty impressive!
With the Nova helmet, Sam Alexander gains incredible strength and can withstand immense damage. He’s also able to fly at extremely high speeds, even through space, and project energy blasts from his hands. The helmet links him to the Worldmind, a vast network of knowledge, making him one of the few remaining individuals connected to it after the Nova Corps was wiped out—aside from Richard Ryder. However, because he wasn’t officially a member of the Nova Corps before its destruction, his full potential and rank are limited.
5) Anwen Bakian

Anwen Bakian comes from another universe—Earth-94241—and is a Nova ranger. She comes from a family with a long history in the Nova Corps, and her powers were passed down from her mother. What sets Anwen apart is her incredible ability to warp and alter reality, powers that are comparable to those of Thanos when he wields the Infinity Stones.
Young Anwen Bakian faced Thanos and demonstrated incredible cosmic abilities. She eventually mastered the Death Stone, which allowed her to defeat Thanos with a single, devastating blast, reducing him to dust. This act alone highlights just how powerful Anwen is as a Nova.
4) Robbie Ryder

Robbie Ryder, brother of Richard Ryder, was a brilliant mind on Project PEGASUS and brought in to rebuild the Nova Corps. Unfortunately, he became stranded on Xandar without his powers, making him an easy target. This vulnerability led to him being brainwashed and forced to work for the Fraternity of Raptors.
However, he later gained much greater power by connecting with the Nega-Bands, transforming him into Dark Starhawk. This highlights a key difference between Robbie and other Nova Corps members: he depends on technology and outside power sources, unlike them who draw power from the Nova Force. This means his abilities are limited by having access to his technology.
3) Firelord

Firelord is actually Pyrus Kril, a powerful warrior from the planet Xandar. He trained at the Nova Corps Academy and bravely sacrificed himself to protect Xandar from Galactus, a being who consumes planets. To save his world, Kril became Galactus’s herald, gaining a portion of the Power Cosmic and becoming incredibly powerful – one of the strongest beings in the universe.
The Power Cosmic transformed Pyrus Kril into a being of pure nuclear energy, essentially making him a tiny star. This granted him incredible strength, the ability to fly faster than light, protection from the dangers of space and radiation, and complete control over electromagnetic energy. Despite possessing god-like abilities, he has always remained under the control of others.
2) Air-Walker

Let me tell you about Air-Walker – he’s a really interesting character. He wasn’t just any member of the Nova Corps, but a decorated war hero from Xandar, even captaining a diplomatic vessel called the Way-Opener. That’s where his path changed; he actually chose to become a herald for Galactus. And it wasn’t just a job – Galactus clearly trusted him a lot, considering Air-Walker was one of his most respected heralds. He wasn’t just serving Galactus, he was a key figure, someone the cosmic being genuinely relied on.
Granted the Power Cosmic, he became a living battery capable of harnessing incredible energy. This allowed him to control the weather, summoning anything from gentle breezes to devastating hurricanes and extreme heat. While not as skilled with the Power Cosmic as the Silver Surfer, he’s still considered one of the most powerful beings of his kind, possessing almost limitless power.
1) Richard Ryder

Richard Ryder is the last surviving member of the Nova Corps, and now possesses its full power. Previously, the Nova Force – a massive energy source – was shared by all Nova Corps members throughout the galaxy. With the Corps destroyed, Richard is the sole host, and recent comics have demonstrated just how incredibly powerful that makes him.
For years, he’s served as Nova Prime, making him one of the most powerful members of the Nova Corps during its height. He also carries the Worldmind – a living, Xandarian supercomputer holding the history and collective consciousness of their entire civilization. Because of this, and his complete access to the Nova Corps Force, he’s the ultimate authority on all things Nova Corps.
