For decades, the Avengers have been Marvel’s top team, protecting Earth from incredible threats. While the Avengers boast some of the most powerful heroes around, it’s strong leadership, not just power, that truly wins the day. Captain America is famous for his leadership, but he’s not the only Avenger who’s stepped up to guide the team. Heroes like Black Widow, Wasp, Hank Pym, Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Sam Wilson have all taken charge in battle, often making the difference between victory and defeat.
The Avengers often rely on the same leaders, which can be a problem. While these leaders are capable, many other heroes could successfully guide the team. Here are seven Marvel characters who would be great Avengers leaders and help the team continue winning.
7) Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange has led an impressive life as the Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth from powerful magical dangers. He’s been an Avenger on multiple occasions, primarily serving as the team’s magic expert, but never really took on a major leadership role. Considering his background, though, he’d actually be a strong Avenger. He might not be a master strategist when it comes to teamwork, but he’s smart, quick to learn, and has battled some of the most dangerous enemies imaginable. He could be an unconventional but excellent choice to lead the Avengers, and would undoubtedly succeed.
6) Thor

Thor has always been incredibly strong and a key member of the Avengers, but people didn’t usually see him as a leader. He was primarily known as Asgard’s best warrior, with his father, Odin, handling the leadership. While he excelled at commanding troops in battle, he wasn’t much of a strategist. More recently, though, he’s been successfully ruling Asgard, proving his leadership abilities. He’s clearly matured as a hero, and it’s time for him to lead the Avengers. He’s one of the team’s most powerful members who hasn’t yet had a chance to be in charge, and he deserves the opportunity.
5) Namor

Look, Namor isn’t exactly liked by the Avengers, but honestly? He’s incredibly powerful and a brilliant strategist, so it balances things out. He’s ruled Atlantis through so much, and for so long, that he’s always been one of their strongest allies… and honestly, one of their biggest threats. We’ve battled him plenty of times, so everyone knows exactly how formidable he is. I truly think he’d make a fantastic leader – and let’s be real, a little bit of his attitude would be amazing.
4) Invisible Woman

Sue Storm, also known as Invisible Woman, is a key leader within the Fantastic Four and arguably its most powerful member. While she briefly joined the Avengers during a particular team iteration starting with issue #300, she’s consistently stepped up as a leader for the Fantastic Four, demonstrating skill in both strategy and fighting. She’s a surprisingly strong contender to lead the Avengers, and her quiet strength and respected toughness make her a natural fit for the role.
3) Spider-Man

Spider-Man stands out as Marvel’s most down-to-earth hero, while still being incredibly strong and intelligent. Although he was initially a part-time member of the Avengers, he became a full-time member in the mid-2000s and quickly proved his worth. While Spider-Man himself might not see himself as a leader, others recognize his potential. He’s grown into a truly exceptional hero, leading different versions of himself and the wider Spider-family in battle. He inspires unwavering loyalty – people would follow him anywhere.
2) Wolverine

No one initially imagined Wolverine as a leader. He was known for being a rebellious loner, rarely following orders. Despite this, Cyclops chose him to lead X-Force, recognizing his skill in combat leadership. He continued to prove his abilities by leading his own X-Men team and running the Jean Grey School. Joining the Avengers further developed his leadership potential, and now he’s poised to take charge of the team. He’s a capable leader, and it would be exciting to see him command Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
1) Cyclops

Cyclops is considered one of the most important and effective X-Men, and a truly exceptional leader – many rank him alongside Captain America in the Marvel Universe. Despite his leadership skills, he’s never joined the Avengers, largely due to disagreements about how mutants should be handled. That makes the idea of him leading the Avengers particularly interesting. He’s a master strategist and trainer who could significantly improve the team’s combat abilities, and it would be fascinating to see what new path he’d take them on.
