For years, the Avengers have been Earth’s top team of heroes, defending the universe from its most dangerous enemies. While other groups like the X-Men and Fantastic Four handle many threats, the Avengers are the ones called upon when the stakes are highest. They’ve consistently proven their strength, defeating every villain they face – which makes sense, considering only the best heroes are chosen for the team. This has made them the most powerful group of super-powered fighters ever assembled. However, even with all their power, they don’t always win, and have suffered some significant defeats.
The Avengers consistently battle incredibly dangerous villains, and even with their strongest heroes, they aren’t always successful. The team has suffered many defeats, with some villains completely overwhelming them. Here are seven Marvel villains who have defeated the Avengers, resulting in memorable losses for the team.
7) Masters of Evil

The Masters of Evil are a famous team of Marvel supervillains, created as rivals to the Avengers. While their lineup has changed a lot over the years, and they’ve often been defeated by heroes, they once achieved a major victory. In the storyline “Under Siege,” Helmut Zemo assembled the most powerful Masters of Evil team ever and launched a devastating attack on the Avengers’ headquarters. They completely overwhelmed the Avengers, taking control of their home and successfully defending against every counterattack. Although they ultimately lost, this victory remains a legendary moment in Marvel history.
6) Absorbing Man

Absorbing Man, also known as Crusher Creel, is often considered a lower-tier Avengers villain. He has the ability to take on the properties of anything he touches, making him incredibly powerful. Despite his strength, he’s not very bright and usually fails to capitalize on his abilities. However, in some alternate realities, like the Earth X universe, he’s proven to be a deadly threat. In one instance, he even absorbed Ultron, gaining intelligence and managing to defeat and disband the Avengers at a critical moment.
5) Red Skull

Red Skull is famous as Captain America’s enemy, but he’s also battled the Avengers on several occasions. While he usually fights them through elaborate plans rather than direct fights, there was one instance where he nearly wiped them out. This happened during the AXIS event, when he transformed into the Red Onslaught by absorbing the psychic abilities of Charles Xavier. He easily defeated the Avengers and even villains who tried to stop him, constantly overpowering everyone. Ultimately, he was defeated through magic, as he would have otherwise killed all of his opponents.
4) Thanos

Thanos is considered Marvel’s most formidable villain, and he’s consistently proven to be a powerful opponent for the Avengers. While he hasn’t permanently defeated them – considering half the universe still exists – he’s usually won decisively in their confrontations. A prime example is the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, where he eliminated most of the Avengers with a snap, forcing the remaining heroes to fight him. Thor was the only original Avenger to survive that battle; all others who fought him perished. Though Thanos has defeated the Avengers in many alternate realities, his victory in the main Marvel universe – this canon defeat – is particularly significant.
3) Korvac

In the 30th century, Michael Korvac was a slave who gained incredible, almost god-like powers. He traveled back in time to what he considered a more peaceful era for Earth, but this brought him into conflict with both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy – though this version of the Guardians was a future team, different from the one we know today. Korvac, with his immense power, defeated and killed both superhero teams. Remarkably, he later chose to bring them back to life, making him one of the few villains from the main Marvel universe to actually kill the Avengers and Guardians, with no deception involved. They only survived because he decided to resurrect them.
2) Kang

Okay, let me tell you about Kang the Conqueror – he’s a seriously formidable villain for the Avengers. This guy isn’t just strong, he’s a time traveler who actively seeks out battles against history’s best fighters. He’s basically been training for war across multiple realities, even taking out different versions of the Avengers from alternate timelines! He’s beaten them countless times, but the story that really stands out is ‘The Kang Dynasty’ – he actually conquered the world, holding the Avengers at bay and defeating them over and over before they could finally stop him. Honestly, after seeing what he’s capable of, it’s easy to see why he’s considered the greatest conqueror of time.
1) Ultron

As a huge Avengers fan, I think Ultron is easily their most compelling villain. Created by Hank Pym, he’s constantly trying to wipe out all life on Earth, and the Avengers have barely managed to stop him on multiple occasions. What makes him so dangerous is his incredibly durable adamantium body – he just keeps coming! But the story that really stands out to me is Age of Ultron. In that arc, he absolutely decimated humanity in just a few months, leaving only a handful of Avengers to even try and fight back. He defeated them so completely that their last-ditch effort was to go back in time and prevent his creation! It really showed how unstoppable he was once he was fully activated – there was simply no conventional way to win against him.
