A sequel to the hit movie KPop Demon Hunters is in development with Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. While the original film was Netflix’s most successful movie release ever – leading to a deal with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans – the announcement of a sequel creates a problem: it undermines the satisfying conclusion of the first film.
Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters has been a huge hit, but its success was unexpected. Sony Pictures Animation seemed hesitant about the film, releasing it directly on the streaming service instead of in theaters. What’s more, the movie tells a complete story with a satisfying conclusion for the character HUNTR/X. Because of this, a sequel would likely ruin the happy ending established in the first film.
KPop Demon Hunters Needs to Have Demons to Hunt

The story of KPop Demon Hunters concludes with Rumi, Mira, and Zoey successfully defeating Gwi-Ma and sealing the Honmoon, effectively eliminating the demonic threat to humanity. This victory felt truly earned after everything the HUNTR/X team endured. The original film’s ending felt complete and satisfying, and didn’t suggest any further adventures were planned. It seemed like a definitive conclusion at the time.
A year after the initial release of KPop Demon Hunters, the HUNTR/X team appeared in some animated McDonald’s commercials, showcasing their usual adventures. However, these shorts also pointed out a potential problem with the planned sequel: HUNTR/X seems stuck in a rivalry with the Saja Boys. While it feels like a repeat of previous storylines, it suggests this conflict will continue in the sequel. Any new enemies will likely bypass the Honmoon family to directly target HUNTR/X.
To make a KPop Demon Hunters movie, we’d need new villains, which would mean revisiting the original film’s happy ending. A less powerful or confident Honmoon would suggest the creators don’t trust the audience to accept this change. Whether it’s bringing back old enemies, introducing new demons, or even a secret group of rival hunters, any new threat risks diminishing the impact of the first film’s satisfying conclusion.
What Does This Mean for KPop Demon Hunters 2?

Despite the recent setback, a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is still possible. Maggie Kang previously mentioned the first film was in development for seven years, which explains the likely long wait for a follow-up. Fortunately, the process shouldn’t take as long this time, as much of the groundwork is already done. Now that the film is becoming a franchise, they can build on what’s already been established. The main challenge will be finding ways to add new dramatic tension to a story that already feels complete.
I’m really excited about how the story can keep growing without losing that perfect ending we all love, though it won’t be easy! Remember how “Golden” was hyped as HUNTR/X’s masterpiece, the song that would supposedly finalize the Honmoon? It’s kind of a twist that it wasn’t actually that song that did the trick. Sure, it won an award and was a real-world hit, but “What It Sounds Like” was what really took down Gwi-Ma. That got me thinking – it totally leaves the door open for HUNTR/X to create an even better song down the line!
I’m really excited about where they could take the sequel! It sounds like HUNTR/X might be on a quest to find a song even better than anything from the first movie. It’s interesting because the people making KPop Demon Hunters 2 are facing the same challenge – how do you follow up something that was such a huge hit? Fans are going to be super critical, and honestly, it makes sense considering how popular the first one became! It also hints that the happy ending we got in the first film might not be quite so perfect anymore, which is a really intriguing direction to go in.
If the follow-up is just as good, fans of KPop Demon Hunters probably won’t mind waiting. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
