While Marvel Comics didn’t invent the superhero, they pioneered many now-common story elements. One of their biggest innovations was the idea of villains turning good. Several iconic heroes – including Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and Black Widow – originally started as villains, and Marvel was the first to frequently explore this shift. Many of their most well-known villains have also had stories where they try to become heroes, with some, like Magneto, enjoying long periods of heroism, while others, like Doctor Doom, only experience brief redemptions. And sometimes, characters who begin as villains simply thrive when they become heroes.
It’s common to see villains switch to the side of good and become fan favorites. Sometimes, a character is simply more compelling as a hero, and their story would work better if they fought for what’s right. Here are seven Marvel villains who would make great heroes.
7) Abomination

The Hulk has battled many powerful enemies, and one of his most dangerous is the Abomination, also known as Emil Blonsky. Blonsky, a former spy at Gamma Base, was exposed to gamma radiation, transforming him into the Abomination and creating a long-standing rivalry with the Hulk. While he’s incredibly strong, unlike the Hulk, his power isn’t tied to his anger. He also retains his intelligence, making him a calculated threat rather than a mindless brute. The Abomination hasn’t been a major player recently, and a change of allegiance could be beneficial for him. Having left his spying days behind, Emil’s primary motivation is now simply disliking the Hulk, making him a perfect candidate for recruitment by SHIELD.
6) Destiny

Destiny is famous for being Mystique’s wife and for working with her to protect mutants from human prejudice. She used to be willing to do whatever it took to secure a positive future for mutants, even if it meant sacrificing others, which made her a villain. However, she’s now portrayed as a straightforward hero dedicated to mutant survival and the downfall of bigotry. Comic books have evolved, and a character once considered a major X-Men villain in the 1980s now fits much better as a heroic figure.
5) Batroc the Leaper

For decades, Captain America has battled incredible villains, many of whom are driven by hateful ideologies. While most are truly evil, some, like Batroc the Leaper, are simply mercenaries trying to earn a living. Batroc, a master of the French martial art savate, has fought Captain America on several occasions, but he’s motivated by profit, not malice. He’s always been a compelling and humorous character, and it would be easy to reimagine him as a hero. Turning Batroc into a hero could finally allow him to reach his full potential as a star.
4) Doctor Octopus

Spider-Man’s enemies, like Doctor Octopus, intensely dislike him, with Doc Ock holding a particularly strong hatred for the Wall-Crawler, second only to Green Goblin. Interestingly, Otto Octavius also developed the closest relationship with Peter Parker, even briefly inhabiting his mind as the Superior Spider-Man. This storyline proved to be Doc Ock’s most popular, revitalizing the character and offering a unique take on Spider-Man. While not a selfless hero, Otto managed to succeed in the role, finding his greatest achievements while working for good – a strong enough reason for him to return to heroism.
3) Moonstone

Moonstone started as a minor Avengers enemy, mainly known for her involvement with the Masters of Evil. She joined Baron Zemo’s team after the Avengers and Fantastic Four vanished during the ‘Onslaught’ event. As one of the original Thunderbolts, she eventually led the team against Zemo when he tried to take over the world, assisting the Avengers in defeating him and becoming a valuable member. However, during the Civil War storyline, when the Thunderbolts were reformed into a team similar to a government-run task force, she reverted to villainy. Despite this change, it always felt out of character, as she had genuinely become a hero, and it’s time the character returned to that heroic portrayal.
2) Apocalypse

As a huge X-Men fan, I always saw Apocalypse as this ultimate, terrifying villain. But things have gotten really interesting lately! It turns out, he wasn’t just about power – he genuinely cared about mutants and wanted to help them evolve. Apparently, his whole ‘survival of the fittest’ thing wasn’t about being a bad guy, but a mission from his wife, Genesis. She tasked him with building an army to fight off demonic forces from this place called Amenth! It’s a total twist, and honestly, I’d love to see him switch sides. He’d be an amazing protector of Earth, a real celestial powerhouse making sure the strong get stronger so they can survive. It’s a fascinating direction for the character.
1) Taskmaster

Taskmaster is a popular, though not top-tier, villain in the Marvel Universe. He has the incredible ability to perfectly copy anyone’s movements after seeing them. Unlike many villains, he isn’t motivated by evil or world domination – he’s a mercenary who fights for money. Recently, he’s become even more popular with fans thanks to his witty personality, cool costume, and engaging storylines. It’s surprising that SHIELD hasn’t recruited him yet – he has the potential to be a real hero.
