In the initial stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), power reigned supreme. The Avengers wouldn’t have made it through their first joint mission without Hulk and Thor, two formidable heavyweights ready to brawl their way out of danger. But as we saw in Avengers: Infinity War, things got more complex when Thanos gathered the Infinity Stones, giving him control over reality itself. This required a change in tactics to defeat him, and having someone like Doctor Strange around who could predict alternate outcomes and ensure good triumphs was invaluable. Since then, magic has become an essential component of the MCU’s fabric.
Emerging characters such as America Chavez and Ned Leeds are finding they possess magical abilities, and an increasing number of sorcerers and witches are stepping forward into the open. Nevertheless, not everyone capable of manipulating a Sling Ring can compete at the highest level, given the MCU houses some extraordinarily powerful magic practitioners.
7) Loki
Following instruction from his mother Frigga on Asgardian sorcery, Loki causes quite a headache. By employing illusions, he manages to wriggle out of numerous tricky predicaments, even after feigning his death in the movie Thor: The Dark World. However, it’s his most remarkable accomplishment as the Trickster Deity – using his magic to rebuild the multiverse and maintain its stability during Season 2 of his individual series.
6) Agatha Harkness
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Agatha Harkness first appeared in “WandaVision”, but she’s actually been around for centuries. Most of her time is spent swindling magic from other witches. Even after Wanda Maximoff seizes her power, Agatha deceitfully maneuvers her coven to regain it. This deceit brings her back on Death’s watchlist, compelling Agatha to fight against an old lover. Facing Death is no stroll through a park, yet Agatha stands her ground.
5) Doctor Strange
It’s indisputable that Stephen Strange is not an early bloomer; instead, he discovered magic following a severe car accident that left him unable to practice surgery. Yet, it appears that magic was his true destiny, as within a short time frame, he managed to outsmart the ruler of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu. His powers continued to expand significantly afterwards, and by the release of his second standalone film, there seems to be little that he can’t accomplish. Strange also embarked on a dream journey into a deceased version of himself and engaged in combat with Scarlet Witch.
4) Ancient One
In any list featuring potent magical practitioners, it’s inconceivable to omit Doctor Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One. Upon Strange’s arrival at Kamar-Taj, she holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme, a position she rightly deserves due to her exceptional abilities in safeguarding Earth from various perils effortlessly. However, meddling with dark magic ultimately leads to her downfall. Yet, her error does not diminish the immense power she wields.
3) Death
In the series “Agatha All Along”, Rio Vidal, disguised as the Green Witch, joins Agatha’s coven. At first, she appears innocent, but as witches mysteriously start to perish, it becomes evident that there’s a deeper secret hidden within Rio. She eventually unveils her true identity: Death herself, on Earth with the mission to claim Billy Maximoff’s soul. Agatha and Billy then join forces to combat this cosmic force, but they struggle to keep up. In a desperate move, Agatha sacrifices her own soul to save Billy’s life. Though Death doesn’t make an appearance in the story, it’s apparent that her powers surpass those of ordinary witches.
2) Mephisto
Mephisto has only been spotted at a pizzeria so far, but it’s evident he’s not someone to trifle with. He bestows The Hood with a magical cloak and resurrects Riri Williams’ deceased friend, Natalie. These actions suggest that Mephisto’s powers are boundless, making it certain that when he confronts someone, he will unleash magic that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never witnessed before.
1) Scarlet Witch
Prior to the release of “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, Wanda was simply a resident from Sokovia, harboring resentment due to losing her parents. The Mind Stone activated by HYDRA unleashes hidden abilities within her that foster her magical prowess, paving the way for her transformation into the Scarlet Witch. It wasn’t until “WandaVision” that she fully accepted this new identity, and once she did, there seemed to be no limit to what she could accomplish. However, her desire to reconnect with her children eventually made her realize she had gone too far, causing her to halt her mission.
