For decades, Marvel Comics has consistently delivered compelling and exciting heroes. While Superman paved the way for superheroes, Marvel truly found its footing in the 1960s by taking its characters in bold new directions, setting it apart from its main competitor. Over time, Marvel characters have become incredibly popular, often gaining recognition through movies and other media more so than the comics themselves. However, the popularity of some of these once-great characters has arguably led to them being overhyped.
It’s common for popular characters to lose their appeal over time. Several long-time favorites from Marvel haven’t lived up to their potential in years, but they can be revitalized. Here are seven Marvel heroes who are currently overrated, along with ideas for making them exciting again.
7) Drax the Destroyer

I’ve been a Guardians of the Galaxy fan for a while, and it’s weird seeing how different the comic version of Drax is from the movies. It’s like Marvel is trying to make the comics match what we see in the MCU, and honestly, it’s not working for me. The movie Drax is… well, he’s mostly there for laughs, but the original comic version was a lot more serious. He had a real history – he’s Moondragon’s father and driven by revenge against Thanos. Plus, his backstory was fascinating; he wasn’t an alien with social quirks, but a human who lost his family and had his mind wiped, which explains his issues. I really wish they’d bring that Drax back instead of focusing on the comedic relief version. It would make the comics so much stronger.
6) War Machine

War Machine is a significant character in the Iron Man story, but he hasn’t been prominently featured recently. He successfully took over for Iron Man and proved himself worthy of his own armor. He was particularly popular in the 1990s because Marvel actively promoted him with his own comic book series and appearances in team-based books. While fans like James Rhodes, they haven’t seen enough of him. To regain his popularity, he needs to be a leading character again, not just a supporting one. Showing, rather than telling, fans he’s a great hero is the key to bringing back his audience, as he’s proven successful in the past.
5) Mister Fantastic

Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, is incredibly intelligent, even if Tony Stark disagrees. He used to be a central figure in the Marvel Universe, and his role as a devoted father has become a defining characteristic – and a bit of a limitation. Lately, Reed has seemed to rely on his established reputation rather than pushing himself. He needs a significant storyline where he truly shines as a hero, inventing groundbreaking technology and saving the world in a unique way. With so many super-smart characters in Marvel now, Reed needs to stand out and reclaim his position as a truly impactful hero.
4) Silver Surfer

Since his debut, the Silver Surfer has remained a beloved and visually striking character. He’s often been Marvel’s leading cosmic figure, particularly after the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. The early to mid-90s were a high point for the Surfer because he was consistently positioned as the central cosmic hero, and that’s the key to his renewed popularity. Simply allow Norrin Radd to take the lead again – he interacts perfectly with other cosmic characters and possesses incredible power. He was designed for this role, so letting him shine is all it takes. The character doesn’t need major changes, just the opportunity to be the focus.
3) Namor

Namor, Marvel’s often-combative hero, has become predictable. His stories tend to repeat the same pattern, and it’s time for a change. We’ve seen him be a villain, fight the Avengers, then team up with them countless times, and it’s grown stale. He was most compelling when he was part of the X-Men and the Illuminati in the late 2000s and early 2010s—those stories explored different facets of his character. To revitalize Namor, Marvel needs to take him in new directions instead of constantly portraying him as a difficult ally to the Fantastic Four and Avengers. They need to surprise readers with something fresh, rather than simply retelling old stories.
2) Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is Marvel’s most famous magic user, but his comics haven’t been very successful lately, and you could even argue he’s never truly had a standout series. The challenge with Strange is balancing his immense power with compelling stories – he needs to be incredibly strong, but there still needs to be genuine risk. Recently, Marvel seems focused on diminishing his power, which is a mistake. Instead, they should embrace how powerful he is and have him face the most significant magical threats in the Marvel Universe. Rather than downplaying his abilities, his comics should center on them. While stories focused solely on power levels can be dull, Doctor Strange is uniquely suited to this type of narrative, and it would grab readers’ attention and keep them invested.
1) Daredevil

I’ve always thought Daredevil doesn’t quite live up to the hype. While he’s been featured in some great stories, they often feel repetitive. A major issue is that he’s often portrayed as too powerful, defeating heroes and villains like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and even Hercules – characters he realistically shouldn’t be able to beat. He needs to lose more often, but that’s only part of the solution. Many writers keep trying to replicate Frank Miller’s style, which has become stale. Mark Waid proved Daredevil can succeed outside of gritty crime stories. It’s time to push the character beyond his usual themes and for creators to try a completely fresh approach, as not everyone can successfully write a Daredevil story.
