7 Sci-Fi Shows for People Who Usually Prefer Fantasy (And No. 1 Isn’t Stranger Things)

Science fiction offers a huge range of stories, which can be a lot to take in, especially if you’re new to the genre. These stories often transport us to different planets, universes, or even time periods, and they’re known for being imaginative and ambitious. Sometimes, though, we enjoy sci-fi with a touch of fantasy. Adding fantasy elements not only enriches the stories, but also makes them more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The shows we’ve selected are categorized as science fiction, but they all include a bit of fantasy, making them ideal for your next binge-watching marathon.

As a huge film buff, I’ve always noticed how easily science fiction blends with other genres – you see sci-fi dramas and horror flicks all the time. But honestly, the *really* special stuff happens when a series manages to appeal to both sci-fi and fantasy fans – it just feels like a perfect combination when it works!

7) Doctor Who

Doctor Who is a long-running science fiction show with a rich history. Originally starting on the BBC in 1963, it was successfully brought back for a new generation of viewers. While the earlier episodes were firmly rooted in science fiction, recent seasons have incorporated more fantasy elements.

Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord who journeys through time and space in the TARDIS – a spaceship disguised as a classic British police box. He travels from one event to another, befriending people, resolving crises, and improving lives. The Doctor is famous for often using his sonic screwdriver to solve problems, proving that force isn’t always the answer.

Over the years, many actors have played the Doctor, and the show has a brilliant explanation for why: Time Lords can regenerate. This clever idea has allowed the series to continue for decades, and fans are very thankful for it.

Doctor Who is available to stream on Pluto TV, Tubi, Britbox, and Disney+.

6) The Mandalorian

Star Wars has always felt a little like fantasy, making most of its movies and shows appealing to fantasy fans. But *The Mandalorian* is something special. It brilliantly combines the styles of Westerns and science fiction, creating a really exciting and unique experience.

The series centers around Din Djarin, known as The Mandalorian, a bounty hunter who typically worked for money. His life took an unexpected turn when he was tasked with a unique bounty – protecting a young child named Grogu instead of capturing him. This decision led him into conflict with those he used to work for and put him in the path of dangerous enemies.

Most people have probably heard of *The Mandalorian* – it’s been incredibly popular! The show takes place after the events of *Star Wars: Return of the Jedi*. There are currently three seasons to watch, and it’s connected to a few other series, including *The Book of Boba Fett*, *Ahsoka*, and *Skeleton Crew*.

The Mandalorian is available to stream on Disney+.

5) Farscape

If you enjoy shows with a large cast of characters and imaginative designs, then Farscape is a great choice. While it explores complex science fiction ideas, the show is also deeply focused on its characters. The world it creates feels fantastical and will likely appeal to fans of fantasy. And here’s something really cool: the Jim Henson Company helped produce Farscape, providing the amazing puppets, makeup, and special effects. You won’t want to miss that!

The sci-fi show *Farscape* is unique because it features only one human character, astronaut John Crichton. After accidentally traveling through a wormhole, he ends up on the other side of the galaxy and teams up with a very unusual crew. This group includes a former Peacekeeper, a Luxan warrior, a Delvian ex-priestess, a living ship called a Leviathan, a former Hynerian ruler, a mysterious creature linked to the Leviathan, and a Nabari thief, among others who join the adventure later. Despite their differences, they eventually become like a family.

Farscape is available to stream on Tubi, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel.

4) Stranger Things

If you enjoy sci-fi with a lot of suspense, drama, and even horror, you should definitely watch *Stranger Things*. It’s a great time to start, too, because the final season is coming in November 2025. Be prepared for an emotional ride! The show blends fantasy elements with strong references to *Dungeons & Dragons*, which fans of the game will especially appreciate.

The show *Stranger Things* takes place in the 1980s in the town of Hawkins, Indiana. The story starts with a mishap at a local laboratory where secret human experiments have opened a doorway to something dangerous. At the same time, a group of friends are playing their regular Dungeons & Dragons game when one of them mysteriously disappears.

There’s no doubt that *Stranger Things* has become a huge part of our culture. Ever since the show premiered in 2016, fans have been anxiously waiting for the final season. Considering the long wait, now is a great time to start watching (or rewatch) before it concludes!

Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.

3) Stargate SG-1

Next, we have *Stargate SG-1*, a thrilling military science fiction series. It began as a sequel to the 1994 movie *Stargate*, but quickly expanded into a much larger and more exciting universe. If you enjoy action, adventure, and drama, *Stargate SG-1* is definitely worth checking out. Plus, it’s the first in a series of *Stargate* shows – you can continue the journey with *Stargate Atlantis*, *Stargate Universe*, and *Stargate Origins* after you finish!

Stargate SG-1 starts roughly a year after the original movie ends, so watching the movie beforehand isn’t essential, but it can be helpful. The show centers around SG-1, a team created to travel to and investigate new planets using the Stargate. Each journey is dangerous, as the team faces the unknown on every mission.

Stargate SG-1 features the formidable Goa’uld aliens, alongside a diverse array of other alien species. The show creatively reinterprets familiar myths from Greek, Norse, and Roman legends. While history buffs might find some of the show’s twists unconventional, fans of fantasy will likely enjoy the intricate details.

Stargate SG-1 is available to stream on Pluto TV, MGM+, Amazon Prime Video, and The Roku Channel.

2) Love, Death & Robots

Love, Death & Robots is an animated series featuring a collection of short stories. Each episode explores a different genre and theme-from action and comedy to science fiction and horror-making it a great choice for viewers looking for something unique. The show constantly changes its style and creators, as each episode has its own independent plot and team.

Of course, there’s a twist. Each episode of *Love, Death & Robots* must focus on at least one of three topics: love, death, or robots. Creators are welcome to combine these themes. With four seasons already released, the show has proven to be very popular.

What’s great about *Love, Death & Robots* is its flexibility – if you don’t enjoy an episode, you can easily move on to the next one! You’re free to jump around and watch whatever appeals to you, and we encourage you to try each episode at least once.

Love, Death & Robots is available to stream on Netflix.

1) Loki

If you enjoy stories about superheroes and a bit of mayhem, consider *Loki*. True to the character’s nature as the god of mischief, the show blends several genres, including superhero action, science fiction, fantasy, and even crime thrillers. *Loki* picks up after the events of *Avengers: Endgame*, so it helps to be generally familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) up to that point. The series frequently references past events in *Loki* and the broader Marvel world, so keeping that in mind will enhance your viewing experience.

The story starts with a version of Loki escaping after stealing the Tesseract and trying to take over New York. However, the Time Variance Authority, or TVA, quickly catches up to him. Luckily for Loki, they don’t immediately punish him – they need his help with a larger, more dangerous problem.

Loki was a truly innovative Marvel series. While its initial story has finished, most fans expect to see the character reappear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

Loki is available to stream on Disney+.
