Being a superhero is no easy task. They face constant perils of varying intensities, putting their lives on the line to safeguard the people. These battles not only cause physical harm but also have profound effects on their mental and emotional well-being. Some superheroes carry a heavy burden of personal trauma as they protect the masses, and for some, this long journey may be taking its toll. It’s time to consider hanging up the cape, as there are characters who have endured so much in their pursuit of heroism that they might be ready for retirement. After all, no character can withstand an endless amount of hardship.
Fortunately, certain characters have successors ready to assume their roles, yet they’d prefer to perish in the endless conflict. Now, let’s examine those who deserve a peaceful vacation sipping on margaritas once they decide to retire.
1) Batman
Bruce has faced numerous hardships over the past few years. It seems more likely than not that he might meet his end before retirement, but it’s high time for him to retire from being Batman. What he truly needs is to find some joy, seek therapy, and spend the remainder of his days indulging in the luxuries typically enjoyed by the wealthy. Many people would contend that Dick Grayson should assume the role of Batman, but that’s not necessarily the case. As Nightwing, Dick has his own objectives and problems; let Tim Drake have a turn at it. In truth, anyone could take over, but someone needs to convince Bruce to put away the cape. He’s given enough service.
2) Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
Over the years, Peter Parker has faced numerous hardships, such as Gwen Stacy’s death, “The Clone Saga”, dying, and dealing with Paul. It appears that he’s had more than his fair share of troubles, suggesting it might be time for him to retire from being a superhero. However, due to his strong moral compass and sense of responsibility, Peter likely won’t give up the costume. Instead, he should consider passing on the mantle to Miles Morales. Given the trauma that surrounds Peter, stepping back from fighting crime could allow him to pursue happiness and focus more on his career. In fact, there could be some interesting stories developed around a mentor role for Peter Parker.
3) Jay Garrick
It’s high time for Jay Garrick, the veteran member of the Flash family, to consider hanging up his boots. Despite his remarkable character and heroic deeds throughout his illustrious career, it’s essential to remember that he has been serving as the Flash for quite some time now. Just like Barry Allen did when he retired his powers, perhaps Jay should take a cue from his successor and do the same, allowing him to savor the fruits of his labor and appreciate his life more fully.
4) Wolverine (Logan)
Logan finds himself in a situation comparable to Jay Garrick’s. Being an enduring character, his partnership with Laura over the Wolverine identity now signals it’s time for him to step down from active heroics. He’s had a remarkable career protecting others, but he yearns for a secluded life in the wilderness. His existence seems to consist mainly of suffering, and if anyone deserves peace, it is he. The Xavier School could always be an option, but it wouldn’t suit his needs. A man like this isn’t meant to teach unless he chooses to. Given the amount of hardship and trauma he’s experienced, retirement seems fitting. What that entails for him remains to be discovered, but with a stockpile of cigars and beer, he should cope just fine.
5) Hal Jordan
At this juncture, Hal simply needs to place the ring aside. Given his extensive character transformations, he’s due for a break, especially considering his notorious Parallax crash. He truly deserves some tranquility. With his relentless pace of living, he’s down to the final thread. For his well-being, it would be best if he pauses and wraps up the day. It’s amazing how he managed to move past the tragedy of killing his friends, and their acceptance of him returning as a hero is commendable. While restoring the familiar order was welcomed, there should have been more significant consequences. I can only hope that whatever awaits him next brings him peace.
6) Professor Xavier
At this stage, Charles – who was once a good man but also had a dark side – now seems unfit to exist. His recent heinous actions, such as betraying mutants and cold-blooded murders in the name of false peace, have solidified him as more of a malefactor than ever before. In fact, his transformation into a villain mirrors the very enemies he once battled against, to the point that his sister Cassandra Nova might find his actions commendable.
Over time, some fans might have grown disenchanted with how much Chuck resembles the old Magneto, given this similarity. However, it’s no secret that Kitty was correct when she pointed out that Professor Xavier can indeed be rather unkind, as he often is.
7) Cyclops
It’s high time Scott takes a break for five minutes. The most satisfying moments in Scott’s life were retiring and welcoming Nathan with Madelyne Pryor, becoming a father. He’s endured immense persecution while standing up for justice, whether it was alongside Jean or Madelyne. Every Cyclops fan yearns for him to have a peaceful life; we wish the weight of all mutantkind would ease for him. All that is known is that he deserves tranquility and serenity.
