Batman is known for his nightly rescues, but even he sometimes needs help – and he has plenty of allies willing to provide it. Despite preferring to work alone, Batman has gathered a large group of sidekicks and fellow heroes. Both his protégés in the Bat Family and his Justice League teammates deeply respect him and consistently offer their support during critical missions, just like the people of Gotham.
Although Batman is famous for always being prepared, he sometimes gets caught off guard by his enemies. When this happens, his friends and partners often step in to save the day, resulting in some iconic moments in comic books.
Here are seven instances where Batman needed rescuing, and was saved by one of his partners or fellow DC heroes.
7) Carrie Kelley – The Dark Knight Returns
Carrie Kelley stands out among Batman’s many Robins as the one from Frank Miller’s famous comic, *The Dark Knight Returns*. She’s a teenage fan of Batman who begins helping him shortly after he returns to crime-fighting. When Batman is struggling to regain his skills and facing a dangerous gang called the Mutants, Kelley arrives just in time to save him from a potentially fatal situation.
After Carrie rescues Batman, he realizes she’s capable of becoming the new Robin. Throughout *The Dark Knight Returns*, Carrie fights alongside Batman, assisting him in reclaiming Gotham and establishing a fresh start. They’re supported by a group Carrie creates called the “Sons of Batman,” and later, the remaining members of the Justice League join their cause.
6) Green Arrow – The Dark Knight Returns
In *The Dark Knight Returns*, Batman enlists the help of older hero Oliver Queen, also known as Green Arrow, when he prepares to fight Superman. Oliver has a personal reason to join the battle – Superman took his arm in a fight ten years before, and this happened before the government banned all superheroes except Superman.
The older Green Arrow eagerly helps Batman when he struggles against Superman. Oliver shoots a Kryptonite arrow – even managing to load it with his teeth! – which weakens Superman enough for Batman to finally win the fight.
5) Superman
Batman and Superman are famous as close allies, often teaming up as the “World’s Finest.” It’s no surprise, then, that they’ve rescued each other from danger many times. Superman, for example, has saved Batman and other Justice League members from threats like Doomsday, famously sacrificing himself to stop the creature in “The Death of Superman.”
In the “Batman: Hush” storyline, Superman rescued Batman from an explosion set by Hush. He’d also previously fought against Poison Ivy’s mind control to prevent her from using him against Batman. Because of this established trust and willingness to help each other, it’s natural that Superman and Batman would come to each other’s aid when one is in serious danger.
4) Alfred Pennyworth
Alfred Pennyworth is one of Batman’s most reliable allies, serving as Bruce Wayne’s devoted butler—and some fans even believe he might be Bruce’s father. Alfred uses his skills and training to help Batman on missions and has even saved his life multiple times.
I’ve always known Alfred was more than just a butler! Even early on, like in that classic Batman #16 issue, he was right there helping Batman and Robin take down a Gotham gang. And it’s not just about support – he’s *capable*. Remember when he even fought Superman in the Injustice universe? He took a pill to boost his strength and went up against the Man of Steel! He’s always stepped in when it mattered most. But the ultimate proof of his dedication? During the ‘City of Bane’ arc, he sacrificed himself to save Bruce, and even then, managed to leave a message that pulled Bruce back from the edge. Seriously, that man’s devotion knows no bounds. A truly good butler’s work is *never* done, and Alfred proves that every single time.
3) Tim Drake
Tim Drake is the third character to become Robin, and he’s known as one of the smartest members of Batman’s team. He famously figured out Batman’s secret identity through his own impressive detective work, rivaling Batman’s skills. After Jason Todd’s death, Batman was hesitant to take on another Robin, but Tim proved himself by saving Batman from the Scarecrow, earning the right to become the new Boy Wonder.
After that initial encounter, Tim repeatedly showed Batman how valuable he was as an ally. He not only lived up to the Robin name, but his story actually started with him rescuing Batman’s life.
2) Catwoman
Selina Kyle, known as Catwoman, is Batman’s primary love interest and has evolved from a villain into a more complex, heroic figure. She’s saved Batman’s life many times, and a particularly famous example is in the story *The Long Halloween*. In that tale, Catwoman rescues Batman after Poison Ivy uses mind control to turn him against his allies.
Catwoman ultimately saved the day by defeating Poison Ivy and freeing Batman from her influence. This isn’t the first time she’s come to Batman’s aid, and her occasional questionable choices seem less important considering how often she helps him.
1) Dick Grayson
Dick Grayson is best known as the original Robin and later becomes the hero Nightwing. Throughout their partnership, Dick has been a reliable and life-saving ally to Batman. For example, in the “Batman: Hush” storyline, Dick helped Batman after he was seriously injured. He also rescued Batman from dangerous monsters in “Batman: The Night of the Monster Men,” following a hurricane in Gotham City.
These examples are just a few ways Dick Grayson has been a vital partner to Batman. His training with the Dark Knight has clearly made him a hero on par with Batman himself.
