7 Worst Things Doctor Doom Ever Did in Comics

Doctor Doom is set to be the next big villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Thanos. The upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, suggests they’ll showcase both his genius-level technology and his magical skills, hinted at by the imagery of crumbling structures. This will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, where Doom will reshape reality itself, creating a place called Battleworld and drastically altering the MCU. This makes Doom a bigger threat than Thanos, as he’s not just destroying things, but completely remaking the universe to his will. However, this plan is still relatively tame compared to some of his most notorious schemes in the Marvel comics.

Doctor Doom is known for some truly terrible acts in Marvel Comics, from completely remaking reality in Secret Wars to attempting global domination in One World Under Doom. Here’s a rundown of his most villainous deeds.

7) One World Under Doom

Okay, so the latest storyline, “One World Under Doom,” was intense. Basically, Doctor Doom actually won! He managed to take over the entire world and became the dictator of every country. It was crazy because he stole the power of the Sorcerer Supreme from Doctor Strange and just…kept it. No one – not the Avengers, the X-Men, nobody – could stop him. What’s even wilder is that a lot of regular people actually supported Doom as their new leader. It was a really dark turn for the Marvel universe!

Honestly, while Doctor Doom does a lot of terrible things, this one always bothered me the most. He claimed he was helping people – ending wars, improving lives – but it turned out he was actually enslaving the people of Latveria! He used them to power himself, all in the name of controlling the world. What makes it even worse is that when he was finally defeated, it wasn’t for some grand evil scheme, but to bring back his goddaughter, Valeria. It almost made him look like a hero sacrificing himself, which just feels… twisted. It really highlights how manipulative he is.

6) Doom Possessed Ben Grimm & Forced Reed to Kill His Friend

Doctor Doom became a powerful magic user with help from Doctor Strange, a decision Strange later regretted. Doom ultimately used this power to take control and become a dictator in the world depicted in One World Under Doom. But long before that, Doom was secretly using his magical abilities to control other heroes, including the Fantastic Four. Despite assistance from Nick Fury and SHIELD, no one could stop him.

But then Doctor Doom did something truly shocking. He took control of Ben Grimm, The Thing, and forced him to attack the Human Torch. As the Fantastic Four battled their friend, Doom revealed his plan: Reed Richards would have to kill The Thing to defeat him. Sadly, Reed was forced to do just that, tragically killing his closest friend. Though Reed later found a way to communicate with a higher power and bring Ben back, this act remained the cruelest thing Doctor Doom had ever done.

5) Doctor Doom Experimented On Asgardians

Doctor Doom has a history of exploiting others for his own gain. In the storyline One World Under Doom, he shockingly betrayed the people of Latveria, using them to increase his power. But this wasn’t an isolated incident. Years earlier, Doom captured and experimented on Asgardians when Asgard itself was positioned over Oklahoma, after Loki granted him access.

Doctor Doom horrifically experimented on captured Asgardians, even forcing them to fight each other. He did this believing he could unlock the secret to immortality. These experiments eventually led him to create his own powerful Destroyer robot, but Thor intervened and defeated Doom, ending the terrible ordeal.

4) Doom Once Sent Franklin Richards to Hell

Look, Doctor Doom is notorious for being a Fantastic Four villain, and he’s pulled some truly awful stunts over the years – I mean, the guy even renamed the bathrooms in his country after Reed Richards! But honestly, the most disturbing thing he ever did, the thing that really stuck with me, was what he did to Franklin Richards. This was when Franklin was just a little kid, a toddler really, and Doom… well, he sent the child to Hell. It’s a shocking moment, and it really highlights just how far Doom is willing to go.

The story quickly became confusing. It started with Sue and Ben attempting to get their baby, Valeria, to speak her first word, which turned out to be “Doom.” Meanwhile, Reed and Johnny were building a joke weapon for The Thing, but Doctor Doom sabotaged it, causing it to fail. When Reed tried to protect Franklin, Doom interfered again, causing the protective machine to malfunction and accidentally send Franklin to Hell.

3) Doctor Doom Manipulated Scarlet Witch For Power

Fans were stunned when the story arc The Children’s Crusade in the Young Avengers comics revealed Wiccan and Speed thought their mother, Wanda Maximoff, was still alive and embarked on a quest to find her. The big surprise was that Wanda was alive, but she was with Doctor Doom and they were planning to get married. It then fell to Wanda’s children to rescue her, as she was under a powerful hypnosis controlled by Doom and had lost touch with who she really was.

Doctor Doom is a villain known for his terrible actions, but his manipulation of Wanda – using magic to make her believe she loved him – was deeply harmful, akin to sexual assault. Wanda’s children rightfully intervened, refusing to let him control their mother. The storyline of the Young Avengers battling Doom to protect her was compelling, and it portrayed Doom as particularly vile.

2) Secret Wars

Similar to his motivations in One World Under Doom, Doctor Doom saw his actions in Secret Wars as a necessary rescue mission for the planet. Facing total destruction from the Incursions, Doom desperately sought a solution. After defeating and absorbing the power of the Beyonders, he used the Molecule Man to construct Battleworld, a new Earth where he ruled as Emperor.

Despite any good intentions, Doctor Doom committed truly awful acts. He forcibly married the Invisible Woman, essentially stealing Reed Richards’ family by claiming Franklin and Valeria as his own children – a deeply violating act against Sue. He even murdered Doctor Strange, a close friend and ally, when Strange began to uncover the truth. Ultimately, Doom caused far more harm than good, driven not by a desire to save the world, but by his own overwhelming pride and ego.

1) Doom Sacrificed His Loved One For Power

Doctor Doom rarely shows affection, but he held deep love for a select few. He cherished his mother, even though he never met her, and desperately sought Doctor Strange’s help to rescue her soul from a demonic realm. Remarkably, he ensured she remained unaware of his intervention, content simply to have saved her. Doom also demonstrated profound selflessness by sacrificing his life to protect Valeria Richards, his goddaughter.

It’s incredibly disturbing to learn that Doctor Doom loved another woman named Valeria, revealed in the ‘Books of Doom.’ He later found her as an older woman and confessed to having been happiest with her. However, he then shockingly murdered her, using her life force to forge a powerful new suit of armor and increase his magical abilities. What makes this even more appalling is that Doom originally named Valeria Richards after this past love, only to then exploit and kill her for personal gain.
