Why Jordan Vogt-Roberts Would Be Perfect For MCU’s Marvels Adaptation
Created by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, Marvels offers a unique perspective on the Marvel Universe. The story follows Phil Sheldon, an ordinary photographer, as he documents iconic events from a street-level view. Through his eyes, we see everything from early battles like the Human Torch versus Namor and the debut of Captain America during World War II, to later events like the rise of the X-Men and the arrival of the Silver Surfer. Sheldon eventually publishes a book called Marvels within the Marvel Universe itself, and is even present for the tragic death of Gwen Stacy.
Though it features major events from Marvel history, Marvels is a deeply personal story told through the eyes of Phil Sheldon. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts excels at telling relatable human stories even amidst fantastical events, as he demonstrated with The Kings of Summer, a touching coming-of-age film. He could bring a similar approach to Marvels, much like he did with Kong: Skull Island. Skull Island successfully balanced human drama with the spectacle of Kong and other extraordinary creatures, and that balance could be key to a successful Marvels adaptation.
Imagine experiencing key moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the lens of a photojournalist. Phil Sheldon, a character who’s subtly appeared throughout the MCU, could be the perfect way to do that. Director Adam Vogt-Roberts hasn’t made a big film since Kong: Skull Island in 2017, and it would be wonderful to see him bring his vision of Marvel to life.
