The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built a strong and lasting fanbase, and one of its strengths is how its movies and shows continue to spark conversations, debates, and enjoyment for years after their release. Even eight years later, you can still find online discussions about whether Thanos was justified in his actions in Avengers: Infinity War. Beyond that, the MCU generates a lot of popular memes that often spread beyond just Marvel fans and become widely used online as a form of quick communication.
Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) began in 2008, its moments have become a huge part of internet culture. Some of the earliest and most popular memes came from movies like Thor (with Tom Hiddleston as Loki dramatically asking “Tell me!”) and The Avengers (Steve Rogers’ “I understood that reference”). But one of the biggest, and surprisingly not created by Marvel itself, started as a funny question fans had while watching Avengers: Endgame: What was Thanos cooking? Now, Marvel is finally going to reveal the answer to this long-running internet joke.
Marvel Will Finally Reveal What Thanos Was Cooking In His Endgame Soup

On November 29, 2020, the YouTube channel New Rockstars – known for their detailed analyses of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – released a video called “THANOS Death Scene in Avengers Endgame: What Was He Cooking? | BQ Bites.” Like many of their videos, it featured host Erik Voss answering questions from viewers. However, this video quickly became famous for its memorable thumbnail, which you can see above.
It’s amusing that when asked about what Thanos was cooking on his farm in Endgame, Joe Voss seriously suggested it might have been an alien butternut squash stew. He even pointed out that Thanos seasons his food, implying he has a sense of taste – a detail the filmmakers probably never thought about! But that was just the start. The video’s thumbnail quickly became a viral meme, used online to express confusion about basketball trades or to jokingly react to strange decisions in the game Super Smash Bros.
This fall, Marvel Studios is finally going to reveal the answer to the popular meme, “What was he cooking?” Simon & Schuster has confirmed the release of Marvel Studios: The Official Cookbook later this year. The book features recipes inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including fan favorites like “Another!” coffee and the Team Schawarma wrap. But it’s the mention of “Thanos’ soup” in the table of contents that’s really got fans excited. Come September, we’ll find out exactly what the Mad Titan was making – whether it’s the rumored butternut squash stew or something else entirely.
