7 Years Later, Marvel is Officially Changing Avengers: Endgame Because of Doomsday (So You Need to See it Again)

Even though it’s three hours long, Avengers: Endgame remains one of the most enjoyable superhero movies to watch again and again. As the epic conclusion to the decade-long Infinity Saga, it perfectly wrapped up storylines and character journeys that fans had followed for years. Packed with unforgettable scenes and exciting action, Endgame felt like a true celebration of everything Marvel had created, and audiences loved it. The film’s massive worldwide gross of $2.799 billion proves how many people saw it multiple times, and it continues to be rewatched at home. Marvel fans always have a reason to revisit Endgame, but a recent event has given them an even bigger one.

Joe Russo, co-director of Avengers: Endgame and an upcoming project called Doomsday, recently shared details about a special re-release of Endgame this fall. According to a report from Deadline, the re-release will include new footage that connects to the Doomsday story. Russo explained that it’s important to re-release the film, and this version will create a link between Endgame and Doomsday. He emphasized that the success of Endgame makes this re-release possible, allowing them to expand the story and continue the journeys of beloved characters in a unique way.

Russo explained that the re-release of Endgame provides important context for Doomsday, essentially setting the stage for the events viewers will see in Avengers: Doomsday this December.

What Will We See in the New Avengers: Endgame Footage?

Anthony Russo described the new footage from Endgame as a connection to Doomsday, but didn’t share any specific details. Marvel is keeping those details secret to maintain the element of surprise. They’ll probably use the footage to promote the re-release of Endgame when the time comes, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect, but that won’t happen for several months. Until then, fans will likely continue to speculate and come up with theories about what Marvel has planned.

I’m so excited for the new footage from Doomsday! It seems like it’s going to focus a lot on Steve Rogers, which makes total sense since he’s coming back and was already a big part of the first teaser – especially with the reveal that he’s a dad now! For years, fans like me have wondered if Steve going back in time with Peggy Carter caused some kind of ripple effect in the multiverse, and it looks like Doomsday might finally explore that. I’m really hoping this new footage fills in some of the gaps and explains exactly how his time travel worked – we’ve all been wanting answers since Endgame!

Besides Captain America, it’s hard to see a smooth way to connect Endgame to the upcoming Doomsday movie in a re-release. While Thor will be important in Doomsday, his story after Endgame was already shown in Thor: Love and Thunder. Bringing in the X-Men, who weren’t involved in Endgame, would feel out of place. Steve Rogers’ Doomsday story, however, continues directly after Endgame, making extra footage with him a natural addition. The amount of new footage is expected to be brief—just a few minutes. Endgame focuses so heavily on the Time Heist and defeating Thanos that adding a Doomsday setup mid-movie would disrupt the flow. Instead, the new content will likely appear towards the end, building anticipation for the December release.

Dedicated Marvel enthusiasts will likely be excited about another chance to see Avengers: Endgame in theaters, but others might find it annoying. Asking people to make a special trip for a movie that’s been available at home for seven years – and lasts over three hours – might not be ideal. It will be interesting to see if Marvel eventually releases the additional Endgame footage more widely, perhaps on Disney+, YouTube, or a new Blu-ray edition. This would allow more fans to see this important story element before Doomsday arrives.
