While The Simpsons is preparing to playfully imitate a popular sci-fi series on Netflix, this isn’t the first time they’ve poked fun at it. The show has actually referenced the series’ predictable storylines several times. As the longest-running scripted primetime TV show in American history, The Simpsons occasionally revisits old plot ideas and brings back beloved characters, so it’s not unexpected.
Disney+ is preparing a special Simpsons episode called “Yellow Mirror,” which is a parody of the series Black Mirror. Set to release in August 2026, it will be the show’s sixth episode created exclusively for the streaming service. The episode features two storylines: one where Homer questions what’s real after finding a broken lamp, and another where a smart tablet befriends baby Maggie and begins to control her.
The Simpsons’ Upcoming Black Mirror Parody Isn’t Its First

While these parodies show promise, The Simpsons has tackled Black Mirror before. In Season 31, Episode 8, “Thanksgiving of Horror,” a segment called “The Fourth Thursday After Tomorrow” also featured a rebellious AI and was inspired by a previous Black Mirror episode. Specifically, this Simpsons segment spoofed the unsettling Black Mirror special “White Christmas,” which featured Oona Chaplin as a troubled, self-aware AI named “Cookie.”
The Simpsons parodied the dark themes of Black Mirror in a recent segment. It featured an AI version of Marge trying to avoid chores and get recognition for Thanksgiving dinner, referencing the existential dread of a character trapped in isolation, similar to a storyline in Black Mirror. Despite being short, the segment was a clear homage to the Netflix series, cleverly including nods to several episodes, including “Nosedive,” “The National Anthem,” “The Waldo Moment,” “USS Callister,” “Bandersnatch,” “White Bear,” and “Crocodile.”
The Simpsons Spoofing Black Mirror Again Makes Sense

Given that The Simpsons already heavily referenced Black Mirror episodes in “The Fourth Thursday After Tomorrow,” even featuring an appearance by the show’s creator, Charlie Brooker, it might seem strange to revisit the idea with “Yellow Mirror.” However, despite all the changes The Simpsons has gone through recently, its return to parodying Black Mirror shows that the show remains consistently fascinated by certain themes.
The earliest ‘Treehouse of Horror’ Halloween episodes for The Simpsons took inspiration from The Twilight Zone, a classic show known for mixing science fiction, mystery, satire, and horror. Because Black Mirror is essentially a modern version of The Twilight Zone – focusing specifically on how technology affects people – it’s fitting that The Simpsons is again parodying the style, even though they previously made fun of Black Mirror itself, which ran for seven seasons on Netflix.
