The Outer Worlds Upgrade Confusion Addressed by Microsoft

Okay, so there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding about the upgrade for The Outer Worlds on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it’s caused some frustration with fans. Basically, Obsidian’s wording about the Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade was confusing. Now, Microsoft has stepped in to clarify things. According to IGN, they said the upgrade was always intended as a thank you gift to players who originally bought the game! It sounds like some technical restrictions with entitlements ended up making it more complicated than it needed to be, but that was the original idea.

The Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade for The Outer Worlds was meant as a thank you gift to players who already owned the original game, offering them a free upgrade. Unfortunately, technical issues and restrictions prevented a smooth rollout, and we understand players are frustrated as a result, as they rightfully should be, according to a spokesperson.

According to their announcement, players who purchased the standard edition of The Outer Worlds on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One between April 30th and May 27th should reach out to customer support.

If you bought the original game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 between April 30th and May 27th, or are having trouble with the upgrade, please reach out to our support team. We’re happy to help resolve any issues and apologize for the inconvenience.

The game’s representative confirmed that PC players who already own the original game will continue to receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade for free, even though the original is no longer available on Steam. However, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players with a digital copy of the original game will need to purchase either the downloadable content (DLC) or the expansion pass to get the upgrade.

Obsidian Entertainment announced the upgrade earlier this month, but some unclear wording caused confusion. Many players mistakenly believed they could get the upgrade on PS4 and Xbox One simply by owning the original game before May 27th. The announcement also led some to think that anyone buying the game after that date would have to purchase the downloadable content (DLC) to receive the upgrade.

A Reddit user pointed out that Obsidian initially stated anyone who owned the original Outer Worlds before May 27th would receive the Spacer’s Edition for free on that date. However, Obsidian has since changed plans and now requires players to purchase both DLC packs.

So, the developers just posted an apology online. Apparently, there are some unexpected technical issues with the game on PS4 and Xbox One – things they didn’t foresee – and that’s what’s causing the problems. It sounds like it’s a platform-specific thing, thankfully, so it shouldn’t affect other systems.

“Apologies for the confusion,” wrote Obsidian. “Due to unforeseen platform limitations, Xbox One and PS4 digital owners will need to own both DLCs to be eligible for the upgrade.”

Originally launched in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, The Outer Worlds has received several updates since then. These include two story expansions, an upgrade called The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, and new versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. When we first reviewed the game, we gave it a 6 out of 10.
