Dutton Ranch Episode 4’s “Heartbreaking” Deaths & Impact On Rip Explained By Cole Hauser

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Dutton Ranch, titled “Start With A Bullet.” In the latest episode, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and his wife, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), face a potentially devastating setback as they try to establish their life on their new ranch in Rio Paloma, Texas. The episode puts everything they’ve worked for at risk.

In the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip discovered their black angus cattle had foot-and-mouth disease. This forced them to destroy the entire herd. Rip personally carried out the heartbreaking task of euthanizing each animal, leaving him deeply traumatized in a way that surprised even longtime viewers of Yellowstone.

Cole Hauser recently spoke with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley about his character, Rip, and the emotional toll of having to kill all the cows on the Dutton Ranch. Hauser described the scene as “heartbreaking” for Rip, explaining that he viewed the cattle as if they were “his children.” He said the experience “ultimately takes a piece of his heart.” You can find Cole’s full comments below.

ScreenRant asked about a particularly emotional scene in episode 104, where the character has to shoot the cows. They noted it was shocking to watch and wondered what it was like for the actor to film such a difficult moment, asking them to describe the experience of shooting that day.

Cole Hauser believes the scene is deeply emotional because it threatens the character’s life’s work and what he cares about most – animals, which he considers his children. He feels immense heartbreak having to do something he doesn’t want to, but he takes full responsibility instead of asking for help. It’s a painful sacrifice. Later, when Beth and Rip arrive, his quiet request for a moment reveals the overwhelming pressure he’s under, ultimately leading to a breakdown.

Rip decided to handle the difficult job of reducing the herd, even with Beth and the two ranch hands, Azul and Zachariah, offering to help. They worked together to dig a pit, which Beth and Rip used to guide the cows into. Rip insisted on being the only one to shoot the cows, taking on the grim task himself.

One of the most heartbreaking moments was when Rip had to euthanize the calf they’d saved from Montana after a fire took their original ranch. The calf had become part of the herd at the newly renamed Dutton Ranch, joining the black angus cattle that came with the property. Unfortunately, it was impossible to save just the calf, as it likely had foot-and-mouth disease.

In season 2 of Dutton Ranch, the ranch’s cattle became infected after they purchased a bull. Beth discovered the bull’s health records had been faked. Rip and Beth responded by destroying the doctor’s trailer who had falsified the documents. However, this didn’t solve the problem for the Dutton-Wheelers, who lost their livelihood when their cattle became unusable.

Wow, episode 4 of Dutton Ranch really hit me hard! Seeing Rip at such a low point was honestly devastating – it’s the most broken down we’ve ever seen him. Cole Hauser absolutely crushed that scene, portraying so much pain. I’m genuinely worried about Beth and Rip now, and I’m really on the edge of my seat wondering how they’ll manage to get through this.
