Though the main series and several spinoffs are ending soon, the world of The Walking Dead still has plenty of stories to explore. Originally created by Robert Kirkman in a comic book series, the TV adaptation premiered in 2010 and was brought to life by Frank Darabont (known for The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist). It quickly became a hit, growing into a large franchise with six successful spinoffs – and potentially more to come.
Although Fear the Walking Dead, World Beyond, The Ones Who Live, and Tales of the Walking Dead have finished their runs, Daryl Dixon and Dead City each have one more season planned. After that, the future of The Walking Dead universe is uncertain. Some believe the franchise might be concluding, but there are still plenty of stories to tell within this detailed world, potentially through new spinoff series.
Connie and Kelly’s Story Before The Walking Dead Season 9 Hasn’t Been Explored
Connie (Lauren Ridloff) and Kelly (Angel Theory) first appeared after Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was presumed dead. Their close bond became a central emotional element in the later seasons of The Walking Dead, and they became important figures in the Alexandria, Hilltop, and Commonwealth settlements. While we haven’t learned much about their pasts, a new series could explore their stories.
I’m a huge fan of Lauren Ridloff, and it’s amazing how popular she’s become since joining The Walking Dead – especially after being in films like Eternals and Sound of Metal! I really hope both she and Theory get the chance to explore their characters more in a spinoff. Their jobs as journalists within the Commonwealth seem like a fantastic way to build a story. I’d love to see flashbacks – to learn about their lives before everything fell apart, and how they first dealt with the zombie apocalypse. We’ve only gotten little glimpses so far, and I’m eager to know more about their backstories!
Most of Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita’s Backstory Is Still a Mystery
Characters like Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita, similar to Connie and Kelly, haven’t had their pasts fully revealed in The Walking Dead. A new show could delve into what they were up to before they met Rick Grimes and his group in Georgia. There’s a lot of potential, as we know very little about people like Josiah, Stephanie, Warren, Rex, Pam, Roger, Dirk, Josephine, and the others who were with them previously.
This would rewind the story to a point when the characters knew how to stop the zombie outbreak. Before meeting Glenn and Tara in Season 4 of The Walking Dead, they were already traveling to Washington, D.C., but had lost everyone else in their group. This setup would be a great starting point for a new series, and could bring those actors back to the show.
The Next Generation of The Walking Dead’s Heroes Could Lead Future Series
As the characters in The Walking Dead have grown their families – through having or adopting children – a new generation of survivors has emerged. While the show previously explored this younger group, a potential spinoff could center entirely on them. This could feature characters like Judith Grimes, RJ Grimes, Hershel Rhee, Gracie, and others.
Over the years, many of the original survivors from The Walking Dead have either died or changed significantly. A new spinoff or revival could focus on the show’s younger heroes, letting them explore fresh stories and build new communities as the world continues to struggle after the apocalypse. Actor Fleming could be a strong lead, similar to how Rick Grimes once was.
King Ezekiel’s Origin Story Could Reveal the Rise and Fall of the Kingdom
Besides well-known characters like Connie, Kelly, Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita, many others in The Walking Dead have unexplored pasts. Ezekiel, the leader known as the King of the Kingdom, is particularly interesting. Before leading his people and offering them hope, he worked as a zookeeper and performer – a background that would make for a compelling story in a spinoff series.
I’ve always been fascinated by seeing the beginning of the zombie outbreak through different eyes. Fear the Walking Dead really dove into that when it first came out in 2015, and we’ve gotten little glimpses in other shows as well. I think a series centered around King Ezekiel and his amazing tiger, Shiva, would be perfect for showing us another take on how everything started and how the Kingdom came to be – it would be great to see that story fleshed out, especially knowing how things eventually turned out in Season 9 of The Walking Dead.
International Walking Dead Stories Should Be Taken Further Afield
While The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead were set entirely in the United States, the spinoff The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon moved the story overseas. The first season followed Daryl Dixon in Europe, and he’s continued exploring the United Kingdom and Spain with Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). Fans are eager to see even more of the world in The Walking Dead universe, and new spinoffs could help expand the story internationally.
The zombie outbreak appears to be global, but we’ve only seen a small part of the world. We haven’t explored South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, or many other regions, and it would be compelling to see how survivors from different cultures are coping. These new perspectives could create exciting, standalone stories that keep The Walking Dead universe going strong and breathe fresh life into the series.
The Walking Dead and World Beyond Made Us Want a Science-Focused Spinoff
The story concludes with Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich), a virologist from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. At the beginning of the outbreak, he analyzed biological samples, trying to understand the cause and find a cure. Although he died when the CDC exploded, Jenner reappeared as a recorded message in World Beyond. He communicated with scientists in France about different types of zombies appearing overseas, potentially caused or made worse by their research.
As a long-time fan of The Walking Dead, I’ve always been curious about the science behind the outbreak, and I think a spin-off could really dive into that. Imagine a show focusing on the CDC, the WHO, or even the scientists initially blamed for everything – exploring what they knew before, during, and after the world fell apart. It could finally give us some answers to the big questions the main series never really touched on, and honestly, it could be a really compelling procedural drama within the Walking Dead universe.
Telltale’s The Walking Dead Could Be Adapted for the Screen
Originally released between 2012 and 2019 by Telltale Games, The Walking Dead video game takes place in the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s comic book series. It centers on Lee Everett, a convicted criminal, and Clementine, a young girl, as they struggle to survive a zombie outbreak. Despite its compelling story and established characters, it hasn’t been made into a live-action TV show – though with the success of recent video game adaptations, it clearly has potential.
The TV show The Last of Us has quickly become one of the most highly praised series ever, and it’s based on a popular video game about a world overrun by infected creatures. The show has the potential to be as successful as the original game. While Lee and Clementine are beloved characters from another game, they haven’t been featured in a TV series yet, but a new spin-off could make them even more famous.
Another Walking Dead Crossover Can Reunite Rick Grimes and His Alexandria Family
Although numerous spin-off shows could take the Walking Dead universe in exciting new directions, fans are most eager for one thing: another big crossover event. The recent return of Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Rick Grimes to Alexandria and their reunion with their family was a highlight. While we’ve only seen them reconnect with Judith and RJ, viewers are hoping to see how the other survivors react to their return as well.
A final series of episodes could bring characters like Negan and Maggie back to the Commonwealth, and Daryl and Carol back to the US. This would allow all the separated survivors to reunite, including a long-awaited reunion with Rick, who everyone believed was dead. It would be a powerfully emotional return for some of television’s most memorable characters and relationships, and could be the perfect way to end The Walking Dead franchise.
