$900M Horror Franchise Just Stole the Perfect Actor Team-Up We Want for a Different Sequel

I was seriously blown away by John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place. He’s a master of building tension – just watching a family tiptoe through the woods, scared to make a sound, had me on the edge of my seat! But then A Quiet Place Part II came out, and it was even better. It somehow managed to be scarier than the first one, the characters felt even more real, and the acting was incredible. Plus, Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou fit right into this world Krasinski created – they were fantastic!

While A Quiet Place: Day One built on the story, the third and final A Quiet Place movie isn’t coming out until July 2027. When it does, both Lupita Nyong’o’s Murphy and Jack O’Connell, who appeared with her in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be in the cast. This raises a question about the future of the 28 Years Later series and its planned third film.

The Likely Fate of 28 Years Later 3

2026 has already been a fantastic year for horror, despite being only three months in. Films like Primate did well and offered a nostalgic nod to John Carpenter, while Send Help marked a great return for horror-comedy fans with Sam Raimi at the helm. Scream 7 became the most successful film in its series, and we’re about to get the new Ready or Not sequel. However, the standout horror film of the year so far has been The Bone Temple.

The movie 28 Years Later received a mixed reaction when it came out, taking the series in some unexpected directions. While The Bone Temple attempted to resolve those storylines, it appears the initial change in direction had already lost many viewers. Despite strong directing by Nia DaCosta and excellent performances from Ralph Fiennes and O’Connell, The Bone Temple wasn’t a success, earning only $63 million worldwide – less than the $151.3 million made by the 2025 film.

Even before the announcement that John O’Connell would be working with Cillian Murphy on A Quiet Place, a third 28 Years Later film seemed unlikely. However, the bigger issue isn’t O’Connell—his character, Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, dies in The Bone Temple. It’s Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, who is now central to the story. Still, you can never completely rule out a return for an infected Jimmy Crystal.

It’s frustrating because the third film, 28 Years Later, seemed like exactly what fans wanted. 28 Days Later is still widely considered the best in the series, and for years, people have hoped to see Jim’s story continue. However, with Murphy currently busy filming A Quiet Place, a continuation of The Bone Temple seems unlikely. The studio should recognize that now is the time to potentially revive the franchise financially with a fifth and final movie, while interest is high. Right now, though, it feels like we’re facing a similar situation to the Divergent films – getting so close to a complete story only for it to be abandoned with one installment remaining.
