For 94 years, Skull Island has been central to the story of King Kong, and the Monsterverse films and shows have only increased its importance. The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes place on Skull Island, where the organizations Monarch and Apex are exploiting its unique ability to open portals to the Axis Mundi. Throughout the Monsterverse timeline, many explorers have been drawn to Skull Island by the Titans that live there. However, the premiere of Monarch Season 2 introduced a new Titan – one that can swim away incredibly quickly.
Sharp-eyed viewers of Monarch Season 2 have spotted a big surprise. The opening credits tease what’s to come, with clear references to Godzilla and Kong and a focus on journeys at sea. But the most interesting clue is an old newspaper clipping that dramatically changes what we know about Skull Island. Apparently, the island hasn’t existed forever…
Skull Island Has Actually Disappeared Before

The headline screamed, “The Mystery of the Missing Island!” A small island in the Pacific Ocean has disappeared, leaving everyone baffled. Local fishermen used to rely on it as a landmark, but now it’s simply gone – as if it never existed. Nobody predicted this would happen.
It’s not uncommon for islands to disappear in the Pacific Ocean. The region’s volcanic activity, known as the Ring of Fire, constantly creates new islands, but also destroys them. For example, Bogoslof Island in Alaska briefly emerged from the sea during an eruption before being worn away by waves. Powerful eruptions can completely obliterate islands, often triggering massive tsunamis – the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa being a famous case, leaving only a fragment of the original island.
This island doesn’t seem newly formed, as it was already a known and reliable point of reference. There’s also no evidence of a massive eruption that could have wiped it out. Considering this is being hinted at in Monarch, it’s likely Skull Island. However, one key detail is missing from the old newspaper report: the powerful storm that constantly surrounds it. This article only deepens the mystery surrounding one of the biggest secrets of the Monsterverse.
Why Did Skull Island Vanish?

The history of Skull Island is unclear, but it’s likely connected to the main storyline of Monarch Season 2. A key clue from the novelization of Kong: Skull Island suggests the island might be a piece of the Hollow Earth that occasionally surfaces. If this is true, Skull Island probably appears and disappears from the surface world as it moves in and out of the Hollow Earth.
This is the first time we’ve seen anything like this in the Monsterverse, which suggests the newspaper article is from a time before the events we’ve already witnessed. We know Skull Island was visited as early as 1933, meaning it must have disappeared and reappeared at some point before then. However, the lack of any mention of the stormwall is unusual, and might mean Andrews’ idea about how it works isn’t quite right. It’s possible Skull Island wasn’t always special – maybe it was just a normal island that somehow fell into the Hollow Earth and then returned, changed in some way.
It’s hard to say exactly how this happened, as the idea of a Hollow Earth is new to this series and hasn’t appeared in previous Monsterverse films. The most plausible theory is that an unusually large portal opened, creating an energy field strong enough to pull an entire island into the Hollow Earth. If this has occurred before, it suggests it could happen again, which is concerning.
Skull Island is a central place in the Monsterverse, helping us understand all the different Titans. The opening of Monarch Season 2 suggests we might see new versions of Skull Island, where the Hollow Earth connects to the surface. It remains to be seen if this will come to fruition.
